Not changing it often enough is what springs to mind. How many miles were on the old fluid?

The fluid is seriously burnt, the reason it is turning black again is the remainder in the Torque converter, but I am guessing that the clutchs and bands are toast.

If at first you don't succeed, try a larger hammer

this is a HUGE warning sign. FYI,mine looks like new after 50k miles. I drive light (original brakes are in good condition) but I have towed several times.

I would definately take the trucklette in to someone trustable for an inspection. You might be in for a bill.

Kevin63,

I would think your powertrain warranty is still in effect, unless you have over 60K miles. I'd get it to a Toyota dealership pronto if you have a warranty.

By the way, your vehicle info on the left under your screen name shows an "ultra rare V4 Rav" They only make inline 4 cylinder(I4) or the V6 model. Just alittle friendly advice...you may want to correct that so others here will take you seriously.

Good Luck,
Dan

Kevin 63, when you say you changed the fluid, how did you do it...a simple drain-and-fill, or did you have a shop do a complete fluid exchange? If it was the former, then the answer cowpill gave is correct...a drain-and-fill only gets about half the fluid out. Do another couple of those and you may have caught it in time, but if it was as black as you say, you may already have internal damage.

It's actually my sister's, but I'm the family wrench.
