I had no idea Panasonic even made automotive batteries. Judging by this line from an article online they gave it up:
Feb. 3, 2011
Panasonic has executed a transfer agreement to sell its automotive nickel-hydride battery business, to Hunan Corun New Energy, a Chinese maker of advanced materials and batteries.

I don't believe that nickel-hydride batteries have yet been used in place of the lead-acid type of storage batteries, such as in high-drain car starting applications. Aren't the nickel-hydrides used primarily in electric and hybrid automotive applications?

RF, you raised my curiousity level. Our 2002 and 2005 Honda CR-Vs had batteries which were clearly labeled Panasonic. Our current 2010 CR-V has a battery labeled Honda. I've done a search on Panasonic's US and global sites and they do not list auto batteries as being in their product line. So apparently either they did make car batteries at one time and do not any more, or had someone else make those batteries and private-label them for Panasonic.

I bought a number of jap cars and none of them came with panasonic. I heard good things of those batteries though.

As for the Walmart battery warranty, they test them extensively on a tester that charges first and load test later. Takes an hour or so, but gives you exact diagnosis.

I just went through Walmart warranty replacement of a 5 year old one in corolla, that was prorated up to 10 years. I had to pay more that $60 to get a new one, close to what the new one was in 2007. Now they are over $100 for the same thing but shorter warranty. Farkakt hidden inflation!

The one in RAV4 is not going to make 3 years. It's going down to 12.25V after a couple of days of not using the car. It's actually good, as replacement should be free.

You live in a climate that's near optimum for battery life, especially as compared to RTexasF.
There was a battery climate map posted somewhere that showed it.

Well, my rav literally eats batteries, yesterday without warnings.the previous days, the car didnt start, now It has its 5th battery in six and half years, bought a panasonic with 3 years complete warranty, I hope It will last more than a year, I think the problem is short trips, I only drive 7 min to work and 7 min back to home (80,000km in six years) with more than 30C degrees, the worst conditions for a battery...

I knew this was coming.......her replacement battery from Toyota crapped out this morning. We were fortunate that it happened right here at home just as mine did not long ago. Auto Zone to the rescue once again! The manager was nice enough to give her a 10% seniors discount so that helped.

You have had very good luck in that the batteries failed at home, rather than somewhere in the boondocks! Was the battery which conked out a Furukawa, a Johnson Controls, or was it otherwise?

Jim,

Both said Toyota 84 month TrueStart on the top with a red sticker and were not sealed units.....that's all I can tell you. Both barely made it two years if that - I'll look them up later. I was absolutely unfailing in checking electrolyte levels monthly and using distilled water to top up as needed. Down here that is NOT something you let go and forget about. No warning, no slow starting, they just croaked.

Both of us are indeed thankful this happened right here at home, we had another car to use, and had the money to get new batteries, it could have been considerably worse. If this AZ battery still turns it over 36 months from now I'll go buy two new ones right then and there.

Side note: For a fella that used to bench press 400 lbs. multiple times it wasn't easy to ask the Auto Zone employee to come get the the old battery out of the car. A bad back haunts you forever once you've buggered it up. Thank God for Mega Ibuprofen and the sense to realize you just can't lift that anymore even though it weighs maybe 50 lbs. Such is life and age. It pretty much sucks but I prefer it to pushing up flowers.
