2007 Gas Tank Capacity

Hello,
This is my first post. I've searched the forums and found nothing on the following.
Just purchased a certified used 2007 v6 Limited. I read on the manuals that the gas tank capacity is something like 15.x gallon capacity however, when I go fill it up, it gets "full" at 12.9x. So I figure it would take the 13 gallons if I let it go completely empty but that is still odd that is is only taking 13 gallons. I normally fill up 10-15 miles after the amber light for low fuel comes on so I imagine it has about 1/2 to 1 gallon left in the tank. It is still lower than the advertised 15.x gallons. Does anyone have this same issue? I am getting around 19-20mpg in mixed city/highway driving and that is ok I guess. It just seems odd that the gas tank would be smaller than the Honda accord coupe I traded in for this Rav4 "SUV". That accord took about 17.x gallons. This is my first Toyota so maybe this is just a Toyota thing. I fear that the dealer somehow replaced the tank for whatever reason with a smaller one. I've gassed up 5 times already and all the same results.
Thank you in advance for any posts/info.

There are 2 or 3 gallons remaining in the tank when the low-fuel light comes on.

Your tank is 60 liters, or 15.9 gallons. This seems to be a standard size in Japan--my '95 Altima also has a 60 liter tank. I think I read somewhere that the reason for this is some kind of rule in Japan that cars are categorized for tax purposes by their weight or size and the fuel tank capacity factors into that. So if they went to a 65 liter tank, the RAV would be bumped up to a larger size bracket and would cost more. This doesn't explain the Altima though, which was built in Tennessee!

My manual says that "the fuel light comes on when the fuel in the tank is nearly empty". Well, no kidding?!

The most I have ever put in the tank at a gas stop is 14 POINT 04 gallons. Yes, the indicator was into the "E" like it was next week. In my RAV, the light comes on when I have 3.5 gallons left. In fact it just happened to me yesterday. I pulled into the station, stopped - and the light came on. I filled up with 12.3 gallons. I have done this many times, so that is why I go with 3.5 gallons when the light illuminates.

In your case, driving the RAV for 10-15 miles after the light comes on and then filling the tank with 12.9 gallons sounds right on to me. Just go with 3 gallons left in your tank when the light illuminates.

The most I have ever been able to put in my rav was 14.9 gallons. I always fill it up to where the gas is at the cap. So I believe it is 15.9 gallons

You should not fill it up to the cap. This could cause liquid fuel to saturate your charcoal canister. Result? A check engine light and a $1200 repair bill not covered by warranty.

So I guess you are dead set on tempting fate, eh?
