2007 Rav4 Limited ~ Humming Noise

Hi, when we are driving our 2007 Rav4 Limited, it makes a sound that I would describe as a humming noise. Anyone knows what that may be or whats causing it? Thanks.

Are you hearing this humming noise only as you accelerate?

Do you feel any vibrations as well? How is the steering?

If you can provide more details, we can help you pinpoint the issue. My initial inclinations are either tire noise (normal), or bad wheel bearings

Sounds are often hard to describe. These would tend to point away from tires:

Does the noise change much when steering left or right? That would tend to point to a wheel bearing.

Is it very different if accelerating vs coasting or uphill vs downhill?

Does it's pitch change if you go into 4th gear at a steady speed?

According to your profile you are in Germany and have a RAV4 V6. Is there a repair shop which is equipped to diagnose and repair that model? Of course it's possible that the noise you are hearing is not related to the V6 engine.

If placing the geabox into Neutral while parked and revving the engine, does the noise occur then? Another test would be to be on the road at some speed, shifting again into Neutral and coasting with no power to the drive train and listening to see whether the noise still is present. If it's possible to include a sound clip someone on the forum may be able to indentify the cause.

Yes only during acceleration while the vehicle is moving.

No noise when going left or right.

The "humming" as I call it is only happens during acceleration while the car is moving. If you remove your feet of the accelerator pedal like when going down hill the "humming" stops until you start once again to press the accelerator.

I have not placed the vehicle in 4th gear.

Yes, there is a dealer I can take the RAV4 to get looked at. I place the car in neutral as you suggested, I was unable to replicate the "humming". On my way home I listened for the noise while coasting downhill with no power and the noise stopped. Tried to replicate humming with the cruise control, I could hear the humming. I can try to submit a sound clip. Hopefully someone can identify the noise. Thanks.

Another sound is "whine". There can be various causes. One that seems to happen at about 40 MPH has hit many: Whining noise at 40-50 mph solved? (updated on 8/26/10: TSB is out)

V6 transmission whine between 38 and 45 miles

describe a sound that you might want to compare.
