I dunno, I guess I don't really care too much about power and just overall cost, so if the mileage increase doesn't offset the initial cost increase over the course of the car's lifetime, then it's not worth getting to me.
It also depends on the type of driving. For us, our driving is 90-95% city.

The big increase with the hybrid's electric motor is in torque. My Accord's electric assist only adds 15hp but boosts torque by 100fp. You can really feel it in low to midrange rpms but less so when the engine revs way up.

Does anyone know the answer to this question?

If there's an AWD Hybrid, I'd have my eyes on that as my next car (in three or fours years).

It won't be 40mpg. The same drivetrain in the Camry hybrid is 40 combined. Add AWD, more weight, worse aero and I expect it will hit the mid 30s (and actually return that in the real world). I'd consider the hybrid just for the driving experience. These are great in stop and go driving (very linear because you start moving in electric only versus an AT w/ a torque converter). My experience in the Camry Hybrid is that it is a great drivetrain. Rarely feels strained and is quick. Roll in that the Rav will likely be significantly lighter than the NX, I bet it will be a great car.

Does this mean there's a possibility for a 2016 redesign of all the RAV4s? I am considering buying a 2015 this weekend but now I'm nervous there may be changes coming that would make it better! I'm not in the market for a hybrid, but I was considering the XLE or Limited. Thoughts?

Unlikely the RAV4 will get redesigned for 2016. The current generation came out in 2013, so still middle-aged for a RAV4 generation.

This hybrid mostly likely just represents an add-on to the current generation, albeit with a few tweaks like those nice tail lights.

In any case, if this priced reasonably AND it has AWD, it may just be a done deal for us. However, if it's astronomically priced (ie. over $40000 CAD for Limited AWD) or if it is limited to FWD, then we might just go with something else, possibly a gas-only AWD RAV4 or a competitor's similarly sized crossover / SUV.

BTW, personally I think it is not a great idea to buy a new 2015 RAV4 this weekend. At least wait until next weekend, after the hybrid reveal has happened. Maybe they'll throw in some other clues about the 2016 non-hybrid then. It's only an extra few days.

Actually it is likely and very possible just like they did with the Camry, the new model came out in 2012 and they put out a another new model in 2014.

The reason they did that is because their competitor Honda was selling more Accords (compared to Camry) because they had a better product.

Fair enough. I wasn't aware the Camry changed so much in such a short period of time. I'll have to look into that. However, either way I do think it's a bad idea to buy this weekend, just days before the big reveal.

BTW, I was in similar shoes a couple of weeks ago. Toyota Canada just added a $1500 cash incentive to the RAV4 this month and in addition, I got an offer from a dealer for invoice pricing plus just a few hundred dollars profit. Add those two things together, and they made for very attractive pricing on the RAV4.

However, despite this, we decided to wait until we heard more about what was coming down the pipeline. Glad we waited the 3 weeks.

The only significant caveat I could see though is Toyota changing their incentive program in April.
