Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Announced

Quote:
Looking to retain its grip on the hybrid segment, Toyota will add a hybrid version of its popular RAV4 crossover starting next year.

In a brief announcement Toyota confirmed the introduction of the new model, though provided no details on a possible powertrain.

Most likely is a version of the hybrid setup currently in use in the Lexus NX with a 2.5-liter 4-Cylinder paired with an electric motor to make around 200 hp. In that car fuel economy is rated at 33 mpg city and 30 mph highway, thought look for slightly higher numbers in the lighter RAV4.

The new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid should set a new benchmark for fuel economy in the compact crossover class.

The RAV4 Hybrid joints the Camry and Highlander hybrids in Toyota’s lineup, alongside the popular Prius models including the Prius liftback, the Prius c, Prius v and Prius plug-in.

The car will officially debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 2nd at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Interesting clues to the new 2016 Toyota RAV4:
-New Hybrid (200HP!! if rumour is true that could solve V6 power concerns)
-LED taillights
-Painted bumper (or at least top half)

Liking the changes already and can't wait to see front end and interior!!
I hope styling changes carry over to non-hybrid models too.

Painted bumpers, nice looking led tail lights, and 200hp is very good. I might just get one for the wife.

I love our 2014 RAV4, but I'd really love a hybrid RAV4! We really liked our Prius v but we wanted an AWD vehicle in the family.

Seems like a natural progression given the other hybrids in the Toyota stable.

I have a feeling the AWD won't get the hybrid option...

I registered on these forums just for this car.

My 2004 Prius got totalled last month in a rear-ender, so I'd been looking for a replacement. My wife preferred a small SUV, but I kinda wanted another Prius of some sort. We considered the RAV4 but somehow we just felt that it needed a hybrid version. In the end I replaced my totalled car with a Prius Plug-in, but decided that we would probably get a RAV4 for the wife, to replace her aging Yaris.

She test drove the RAV4 and we were tempted by the current cash incentives (CAD$1500 in Canada), but ultimately we decided to hold off to see what late 2015 or early 2016 would bring.

There were some articles suggesting the existence of a RAV4 hybrid but most of those articles were bogus sounding. However, there was an article from 2012 which seemed at least a little bit legit that indicated Toyota was working on it.

Furthermore, Lexus has just released the NX 300h, and Toyota just announced they're discontinuing the Venza here. The Venza has a price point that fits nicely for those in the market of a RAV4 hybrid IMO. So, there were too many clues for us not to wait. I'm sure glad we did.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't get the AWD. At least for Canada, the AWD is an extremely popular option. If the hybrid isn't AWD, then it will make it significantly less attractive to us.

I would hope the mileage would be 40MPG or so. If not, they really should just push the fact that it's more power rather than a hybrid.
I dunno, I guess I don't really care too much about power and just overall cost, so if the mileage increase doesn't offset the initial cost increase over the course of the car's lifetime, then it's not worth getting to me.
