4th Gen Highest Mileage - Post your High Mileage 4th Gen

I'm trying to get a baseline on how long the 4th Gen, 6-speed automatic transmissions last. Since the announced 2019 will have 8 speeds, it stands to reason that more gears equals more shifts and may shorten the total life expectancy of the transmission. I currently have a 2nd gen rav4, with a 4 - speed automatic, and they are known for getting 200k miles+ regularly with some over 250k or even 300k. Can the 4th and 5th gens even compete?

Q's:

Are the 6 speeds regularly getting to 200k+?

If not, what average age / mileage do they die?

Can the 8 - speed realistically get that long of a life?

~ After watching the Weber Auto Channel on this type of transmission,
I'd have to think not because of the return of the band, but it's still not as bad as a CVT. See Youtube: Aisin 8-Speed FWD Transaxles - (Wouldn't let me post link)

Please post how many miles you have on your 4th gen Rav4, the higher the better.

My late-in-the-year model '15 has somewhere between 75k and 80k. No problems yet. Might need front pads next time I go in.

That's an assumption which is not supported by facts. Better control of RPM and loads might decrease wear, not increase it.

Your comment about CVTs also has no relevance.

Your point about decreasing load is valid and I hope that proves to be the case with the 8 speeds. However, transmission components wear upon shifting not staying in gear. More shifts generally equals more wear on shifting parts. Clutch discs only wear when engaging, like a manual transmission. If there are more shifts on a clutch there is more wear. Electrical solenoids can only click so much before failure. The more clicks, shorter lifespan - as with all moving components.

CVT is another topic but I have never heard of CVTs reliably going 200k miles and many, many fail <100k - see anything Nissan.

Thanks for the input. I'd recommend learning the transmission fluid change procedure, it's not normal when there is no dipstick. Toyota says it lasts for life, but not me.

I have a 2013 with 69k.

My gas mileage had gone down steadily since I bought it but I did have my torque converter replaced recently so I'm hoping that improves now.

My extended warranty runs to 75k miles. I hope anything that goes wrong does it before the warranty is over. Did have the starter replaced right after the torque converter. Keeping my fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong.

Thanks for reply. Are the TC and starter problems common?
