Slow to engage drive from Park. Reverse OK.

Hello. 2013 Rav4 2wd Limited. 60k miles Not in ECO mode. Half the time you shift from Park to Drive it takes 2 to 3 seconds to go into gear, half the time it engages quickly. Engine cold or warm 80F day. All other shifting seems fine. Thoughts?

Mine is about 1 second which I find too long still.

I honestly think it’s a weakness in the transmission.

2013 XLE here. 1 to 3 seconds pretty standard...enough that I have to pause for a beat before pressing on the gas pedal so that I don't get a jerk as it engages at higher RPM.

Angry Me Too, 2014 AWD XLE

Exact same behavior on my 2014 AWD XLE, not in ECO or Sport mode, etc.. Mine also seems to shift a little rough, has done this since I bought it in 2017 with 45,000 miles. Finally took it to the dealer this week because my wife and daughter would complain about it when driving and it seemed like it was getting worse. Dealer (who I trust and has treated me very well) didn't find anything wrong but said it should not do that. Fluid level, fluid color and all electronics checked out, they think something mechanical/physical inside is the problem so next step was to pull the tranny for repair or replace. Silly me for not knowing this but I didn't know Toyota had a 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. I'm at 60,675 miles and 4 years 10 months. Dealer called Toyota for goodwill repair since I'm over the miles (I actually made the appointment last week, couldn't get in until this week and took a long trip over the weekend that pushed me over). Anyways, Toyota "politely declined to extend goodwill". My dealer offered to fix it at cost but also said a transmission shop could do it for a lot less, he felt bad but his hands are tied by Toyota on the warranty coverage. Anyways, not too happy with corporate Toyota so I'm thinking I'll just keep driving it until it dies or was looking on these forums to see if it's "normal". So far as I can find, people with this issue haven't reported the tranny dying and I can live with the rough shifting. I'l keep the thread posted if mine gets worse or does die.

Me Too, 2014 AWD XLE

Same exact thing here, mine's been doing it for the past 6 months or so, maybe longer. Anyways, my wife and daughter started driving it and complained and it feels like maybe it's been getting worse (longer delays, shifting seems rougher) so I finally took mine to the dealership (whom I trust and they've done good work for me in the past) and everything checked out on the tranny (fluid level was down a bit, they topped it and it was clean with no burn smells or contamination evident, electronics all OK) but they agreed this behavior not correct. Next steps would be pulling the tranny and repair or replacing.

On a side note, I did not know this car had a 5 year or 60,000 mile powertrain warranty, I just assumed 3 years bumper-to-bumper (I bought it used in 2017 with 45,000 miles). I'm at 60,675 miles and still under 5 years but the dealership couldn't do it under warranty and said to call Toyota to see if they would do a goodwill gesture. After some extensive phone time with Toyota corporate, they "...politely decline to provide any goodwill repair or discount..."

So I'm going to just keep driving it and keep this thread posted if it gets worse or fails. Based on other posts, it seems some just RAV's have this characteristic but it's not a sign of impending failure. Would love to hear others' who've had this issue either confirm or rebut that idea. Thanks!
