Removing dealer installed roof rack (flush rail style)

I'm looking for instructions on how to remove the Toyota crossbars (PT27842192) that came with my Limited, and can't for the life of me find them online. The only visible fastener either requires a custom tool, or is a dust cover that doesn't want to come off (see attached image).

Anyone installed them on their own yet? I don't expect to be taking them off and on often, maybe for long highway trips, but it bugs me not to know how.
thanks!

I would contact the Dealer, one with think a tool would come with the car. Did you check the spare tire area?

The oval shaped "lock" slot for the cover on each end of the crossbar can be turned with a flat blade screwdriver, then the cover can be removed exposing the bolt that holds the crossbar end on, you should have a plastic bag somewhere in the vehicle with the tool, lock key and instructions plus the covers for the rails after removing the crossbars, mine was in the glove compartment, if not your dealer owes it to you.

Ah thanks- I hadn't noticed the tiny key in the bag with the covers. No instructions though- if anyone can take a pic of theirs it would be greatly appreciated.

Why leave the crossbars on when they're not needed? They just add more wind noise and certainly don't improve fuel economy.

Perhaps they are a different shape on our '08 models but I've never heard wind noise from them. What would one save in fuel....... 1/4 MPG maybe? In our case they are just as they came from the factory, no reason to remove them.

I'm with you. I'll put mine back on when I need to carry something on the roof. Otherwise they're like mammary glands on an intact male bovine.

I'm with Quickdtoo and Astrodoof on this one. Just took the crossbars off mine two days ago. Looks much better already. I was surprised how quick and easy it was. Just have to figure out where I'm going to store them so I don't forget when I do need them.
