First oil change

So when did you do your first oil change? The manual doesnít say anything about the first one being with low mileage. Are you doing it anyway?

Oil change requirements are in the Warranty and Maintenance guide that you should have received with the vehicle, inspections and tire rotation at 5k miles or 6 months, which ever comes first, oil and filter at 10k miles or 12 months.

I will be doing mine at 5000 miles and every 5000 after that.

So I will let the dealer do the one at 10,000 and 20,00 but will bring it in every 5000 miles for its check ups.

As much as I dislike the idea of changing the oil every 10,000 miles, both the dealer and the service department said that I should "stick with the program". So I will give it a try.

The manual also says you should do an oil change at 5K if you did a lot of short trips/cold starts etc. So hopefully, you can try to get the dealer to do it based on that.

I'll be doing the same thing with my new RAV4 that I did with my 2015 Corolla. I have been going to the same independent hometown shop for somewhere around 35 years, and they have treated me right over every one of those years. I talked with them about 10,000-mile intervals when I got the Corolla, and the guys there said that "they have seen some really ugly things at 10,000 miles." So, we decided that 5,000-mile intervals would be much better, and so that's what I did with the Corolla. And that's what I'll do with the RAV4.

So, the first change at 5,000 miles will be at the local shop, then the 10,000 mile "free" one at the dealership, then the next one at 15,000 miles at the local shop, and so on. And then after the second "free" one from the dealership at 20,000 miles, I won't likely be spending much time at the dealership's service department.

I will also make sure that the tires are rotated at each and every 5,000-mile oil change -- just keep rotating those tires, right along with each oil change.

Once upon a time, I did the first oil change at 1,000 miles, but my local shop guys thought that things have progressed along enough that it's not really needed anymore -- engine tolerances are much tighter, and the manufacturing processes are much more precise than they were, "back in the days."

Cheap insurance plain and simple, I already have supplies for 3 oil changes myself.

It doesn't hurt to service your vehicle sooner. I'm a Toyota tech and change the oil and rotate tires every 5000 miles. When it comes to my personal vehicles I always do services earlier then what the manufacturer recommends.

Hubby is in the 1,000 camp. The dealer gave us free oil change coupons for 5,000 miles, 15,000 miles and 25,000 miles. So together with the 2 free changes that Toyota gives, it looks like I’ll be doing it every 5,000 miles. I’m on the fence with the first one at 1,000 miles though. I’m at about 500 miles now.

I did every 10,000 on my '13 Carolla. When I traded it at 170,000 it used about a quart every 10,000 miles. No smoke just burned it off this time I'm doing every 5,000 after my free oil changes.
