Question whirring sound

I happened to be in the garage tonight around 11:45pm and I heard a faint whirring sound. I went outside and the sound is not outside. I went back inside the house and the sound is not inside. It was definitely coming from the parked RAV4 in the garage. I could hear it better when I knelt down to look under the car. Then it changed to a slightly higher pitch (like whatever it was spun up), then it went off. What could it have been? The car was parked and had been parked for hours, engine was off, and I didn't have the keys with me. I don't know how long it had been whirring. Do you think it was some sort of self diagnostic/automatic health check?

Sounds like the fuel evaporation leakage check and it’s normal.

Could be the fuel evaporation leakage check which does have a humming type sound. Should be able to hear it outside as well. Haven’t heard it on the RAV4 yet but have heard it on my previous car. Is weird to hear when it’s been parked for a while and it’s making these sounds.

From the owner’s manual:

“Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.”
