2019 Rav4 USB issues already...

I bought a 2019 Rav4 XLE Premium on March 22. By March 24, the USB that connects to the head unit wouldn't recognize any device plugged in. It would not connect at all, would not charge (yes, I know it's a very slow charging port). We tried my Android Galaxy S7, my iPod Nano that was new as of last year, my husbands iPhone 7, and various cords. Nothing was recognized by the system. Since then it has worked intermittently...one day it will recognize my iPod, then next time I start the car it doesn't. Same with my phone and other devices. When I bought the car I was told explicitly that my Android phone would connect with Entune and I could use Scout GPS to get maps on the head unit. Again, this worked perfectly the day after I bought the car but now doesn't work. Also, the car started to have a "seizure" whenever anything was plugged into this USB. I was driving with the iPod plugged in, and suddenly it stopped playing, the main Toyota screen popped up followed by the home screen, then it shut down again and repeated this over and over until I unplugged the iPod. I have been in contact with several different service people at the dealership, have had the car in 3 times since I bought it (not even a month ago) and here is what I'm being told...

The USB port isn't supposed to charge. (Okaaay, but it WAS charging.)
My phone isn't compatible with the car. (Okaaaaay, but it DID work, and the documentation on the Toyota website says it IS compatible...)
My iPod has too many songs on it. (This is my personal favorite as it is so obviously bullcrap.)
There is a corrupted song on my iPod. (Ok, I'll believe this one, but still...)

Does any of this make sense to anyone?

Since my last visit, my 10 year old iPod has been working perfectly. I have had it plugged in for 2 days and no issues. They did do an update at the last visit, but to be told that there are too many songs on my iPod? Really? No. Not buying it.

Sad thing is, I LOVE MY CAR.

Any thoughts?

The general feeling I am getting from Toyota with the Rav is that everything that does NOT work is absolutely normal. If it breaks, it's normal, if it does not operate properly it is also normal. I had my way with 2 dealers in my 4 months of ownership already so far. This is my first ever Toyota, I heard so much about their good reputation and so far all I am experiencing is a bunch of BS and incompetent staff either at the dealer or at the support/costumer line. They have already demonstrated in a few instances their incapability's of diagnosing and finding a solutions to a point that I refuse to lose time at the dealership anymore and I'll simply fix everything my-self that is not a recal.

Just like you, I love my Rav4 but I am starting to hate the brand.

I went back to the dealership yesterday and talked to the sales guy who showed me how to get my Android to work. He saw the issues I was having and stated that it may have been that an update on the head unit was released the day after I bought the car that dropped the Samsung Galaxy S7 from being recognized. He mentioned that, most likely, they will release another update that will add it back. This morning I tried a co-workers Samsung Galaxy S9 and it wasn't recognized by the car either. So, even if I did get a new Android phone at this point, it still wouldn't work with the car.

Like you, I LOVE my new car. However, I am very disappointed in the total UNreliability that I am experiencing. I am going to contact Toyota directly and see what they say. If they are going to alienate half of their possible customer base by not supporting Android phones, they need to inform the sales staff so they don't unknowingly lie to their potential customers by saying Android phones work with the car.

I should have bought the Mazda...

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but I though any type of android phone was not supported? I know when I bought my SUV I was told that the Rav does not support Android auto yet? As you can tell I have Apple.

I was also hesitating with the CX-5 my-self but it was a few grand more than what I paid for my Rav plus the Rav had more equipment. A family member has a 2019 CX-5 and honestly I prefer the ride in my Rav.

What exactly are you expecting your RAV to do when you plug in your Android phone? I assume your are not expecting the RAV to support Android Auto because it has been disclosed from day 1 that it would not; only Apple Carplay.

2019 Limited AWD. Ruby Flare Pearl. Black interior.

I too was told multi-times that Rav4 does NOT support Andoid at all. Maybe, a different configuration between Canadian Models and the USA models, maybe.

I haven't bought yet and am rethinking between, Subbie Crosstrek, CX-5 and Rav4. Many people have told to to stay away from the first year generation. Maybe, they have a point. Is Toyota using us as Guinea-pigs ?

If you read the 1st post, the OP wants Entune and Scout GPS to work with the Android phone which shouldn’t be an issue. I hope it was a given that Android Auto would not work.

Does a demo RAV4 work with your phone? Sure it’s not a defective port or headunit? Keep bugging them till it’s fixed.

It's the dealer not supporting the customer. They already have your money. Buying a car from a dealer requires the dealer to support the customer after the sale, and most of them do not. If you bought a really expensive car like a Porsche, BMW, etc. you may get better attention. There should be a "Car Buyer's Bill of Rights".

Yeah, there may not be Android auto, but it should still recognize the device when plugged in, and certain Entune apps are supported with android.

For the OP, I canít add much more than that. I have android phone, but have only ever used Bluetooth and use a separate charger plugged into the 12v outlet...never tried to actually do any thing that interfaces with the head unit over usb

It's the dealer and Toyota. The first thing the dealer is going to do, if they do anything, is compare yours to another on the lot. If they can find something on the lot that exhibits the issue your vehicle is having, they're gonna say "it's normal". If you call up Toyota Care, they may or may not send a specialist out depending on the complaint. Unless they can collect data that blatantly indicates an error condition, especially if other vehicles on the lot are like yours, they're pretty much guaranteed to come back saying "it's normal". Until they get so many complaints they have to do something. I have two types of transmission shift shock with my vehicle and what I just described to you is how they responded to me. I've requested Toyota buy my vehicle back and my case manager submitted the paperwork, but I'm not sure why Toyota would agree to buy it back if they've already stated that there is nothing wrong with my vehicle. If they do decide to buy it back I'll be sad on the one hand, because there's a lot I really like about the vehicle - but if it means getting free from an unscrupulous manufacturer (is there any that aren't now days?) and a vehicle that is likely to have reduced service life and unpleasant driving experiences, I'll still be happy.
