They don’t need a deposit to secure a vehicle already in the pipeline. Good friend of mine is a GM at a local Toyota dealership and I asked this very same question when I ordered a Tacoma several years ago. Basically, you are wanting to reserve one that is already slated to be built that has not already been assigned to a region or dealer. They already know all the configurations that are going to be built as these vehicles are not built a la carts so therefore they are not custom. Now if you order a MINI or certain models of a BMW or Mercedes you can have a custom build because a lot of the options are a la carte

I hope it is a real VIN!
I appears to be a real VIN. It starts with a "2" so from I can tell, it's being built in Canada.

I understand the dealer doesn't have his real costs yet and I wasn't asking him for that. I guess what I'm saying is it seems to me that any dealer could say I'll knock 500 bucks (or whatever) off the price - even without knowing what the final price will be. It's a $40k car and not unlike any of the other 100's of Rav4's they've sold over the years. Surely they could throw out a number. Any number.

The point in my OP was that the dealer expected me to put a deposit on something without telling me what the price was for the car. He never replied to my email asking what his discount was so it may be a moot point. I suspect I won't hear back from him.

I do appreciate your feedback. I'm just frustrated shopping for a new car. I hope some day the industry changes the way they sell cars but I don't think that will happen in my lifetime.

Hmm...you ordered a hybrid right? Is Toyota making hybrids in Canada as well because all of the other hybrids are coming from Japan. I could be wrong

Toyota announced a while back that for this generation they will build both gas and hybrid Rav4s in Canada. I thought that the first ones might come from Japan but apparently not.

The Limited hybrid built in Canada won't have the panoramic sunroof, whereas the one built in Japan does. I'm from Canada and a bit miffed that Canadians won't get the panoramic sunroof as all our hybrid models will come from the Canada.

I didn't order this Hybrid. I found a local dealer who said he can get one that is in the pipeline that meets my specs.

Glad you found a better dealer. Is this one reserving the vehicle for you? No deposit? Are they giving any pricing or giving you the same line that pricing is not available yet?

It's the same dealer that I started with. He wants a deposit to hold the car but won't quote me any discounts off MSRP. I asked him if he would refund any deposit paid if we can't agree on the purchase price. No reply yet.

Prices paid vs MSRP Please

It would be great to hear from recent buyers. Model, MSRP, Price paid (excluding taxes), and location. Thanks!
