Waiting for 2020?

2019 being the first year of a major design change, I'm sure some folks, like myself, are pondering waiting for a 2020 model. I am not familiar with the Toyota brand but I am pretty excited about a Rav4 Hybrid for my Florida car. I am surprised the 2019 model is coming out in March of 2019 or so, that is pretty late, kind of strange. Why so late?

In my case, I don't really need the car for several months, October at the earliest and "need" is not really true either. I could easily wait until January of 2020.

So, what I wonder is, with the 2019 coming out so late, I wonder when the 2020 will come out? And I wonder what tweaks will have been made?

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't be surprised if the 2019 misses Android Auto and it comes with the 2020 model. I'm leasing the 2019 for reasons like this. The tech is changing so fast in cars these days, even in "cheaper" cars (Yes, I know many consider the Rav4 to be expensive, especially in the Limited trim, but it's still substantially less than a luxury SUV of the same size like the Q5, NX, Macan, RDX, etc). I'm looking to see things like power folding side mirrors, a HUD, power front pax seat, and others to see introduced before I am ready to buy a Rav again.

I’m assuming you’re referring to the 2019 hybrid rav4 which did roll out in March. The gas version of the 2019 rav4 did in fact rollout last December. This delayed rollout of the hybrid was always the plan as laid out by Toyota. A reason was never provided, as far as I can tell, but it could either be due to time to get suppliers and/or factories up to speed to produce the new hybrid, which is significantly different than the 2018 model.

They are also opening a new plant for the hybrids in Kentucky which will take over production duties from Japan. It will still also be made in Canada in conjunction with the new plant (correct me if I am wrong).

According to Wikipedia, the Toyota factory at Georgetown, Kentucky opened in 1986 and is now the largest Toyota automobile factory in the world. As mentioned, it is being expanded to handle the new Rav4 hybrid, but only starting with the 2020 model. So the Canadien and Japanese plants will continue to ship 2019 rav4 hybrids to the North American market for the next 7-8 months.

Saw some politicians spouting psycho babble about a large grant $$$$ from the rav4 plant the other day, I don't see production being moved in the near future. Part maybe.

Good timing on Kentucky expansion

So moving production from Japan to Kentucky will prevent customers being hit by these tariffs. Note that a tariff would otherwise punish the US customer, not the Japanese government.

Since when did Japan become part of China? I believe the tariff's increase from the NAFTA pull out mainly is affecting cars and parts from Mexico. I can't think of any cars here that are imported from China, which would be subject to tariffs. You should not see in increase in price from Toyota due to the tariffs.

Have a good day.
The Trump administration has been proposing 25% tariffs on all imported autos for some time. And while the most recent skirmish is with the Chinese (and there are vehicles built by the Chinese that are imported to the US), if applied to all imported vehicles the tariffs would indeed affect the price of a rav4 hybrid built in Japan and sold in the US.
