Can you start your Rav4 hybrid w/o pressing the brake pedal? Mine starts with or w/o using the brake pedal. My LE has the ignition key-based fob. Let’s hear if that works for you!
I’m aware but this isn’t most hybrids. I’ve owned 3 Toyota hybrids. I can certainly demonstrate. Can I post a short video on this site just like a photograph?
There is no difference whether I use the brake or not. I insert the key and turn it, the dash and media center lights come on, the tone sounds and the ready light comes on. Sometimes the gas engine starts. I’ve owned three Toyota hybrids and I know when they are started. Have you tried it?
Seriously...anyone tried this? I’m very curious if it matters that I’ve got a key vs a push button ignition. Or if there is something “off” with my Rav. Everything works perfectly otherwise.
Just as a follow-up, I talked with my dealer service department and they’d never heard of it. Called my sales guy and he said that others with a key DO NOT need the brake depressed to start but all that have the push button do. Anyone else even own one with a key?
I know my Hyundai "push to start" will start if you have the fob, and press and hold the start button for some 30 seconds. This is to bypass the "safety" brake switch (not brake light) on push to start.
I thought every modern car had to have the brake pedal depressed to start the car and brake pedal depressed to put it into "drive", no matter if it was a "push to start or key" to avoid "sudden acceleration syndrome". That "press brake pedal to start and shift into gear" coming from the Feds when some 1990's Audi cars that people were claiming accelerated when they put their car in gear.
There is a nice video of an Audi flying out of a garage, backwards at full throttle. In the video, you can see the brake lights were on. The owner claiming he had his foot on the brake and when he put the car in reverse, went backwards full throttle.
According to what they found was "mis-application of the gas pedal", the driver had their foot on the gas and put the car in gear. This is still happening with cars smashing into buildings, people pressing the gas, not the brake pedal.
Every RAV4 that I know of that uses an ignition key can be started WITHOUT pushing any pedals. Someone in the passenger seat can reach over and start it with the key. The only reason the brake pedal needs to be depressed is to unlock the shifter and allow the vehicle to be shifted out of Park.
Yup, that’s what I found out. It’s just been so long since I had a car I could start w/o holding down the brake that I had to find out for sure if it was an anomaly.
