Question What VSS is it?

I have bought a used Rav4 second gen about two years ago. They sold it for a very reasonable prize because the engine was replaced. Maybe the auto-transmission too, that I do not know - this might be important however.

The car had no problems until recently when the speed meter sometimes fell down to zero while moving. I received an engine code P0765 too.

They told me to replace the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) before doing anything else that is located on the auto-transmission.

I called Toyota to ask the part number of my VSS. Based on my chassis number (JTEHH20V106022679) they told me the part number is: 83181 - 42010.

I ordered a new one on Ebay: here is the link (I can not post links yet. Soon!)

When I unscrewed the old one I compared it to the new one and I saw that they are different. It might be for two reasons:
a.) they sent me an incorrect part
b.) I have a different transmission than this chassis originally had (was replaced too?) so the VSS "83181 - 42010" is not what I need

The old VSS gear has 23 teeth. The new one only 22. The gear diameters are also differ: old one is about 22.5mm, the new is 20mm. Lengths are the same.

Other shapes and diameters are also different, let me show you that on this picture. (I can not post links yet. Soon!)

What VSS is it? What A/T? Anyone can help with information?

Thank you!

After a lot of googling, I think the best thing you can do is try to find out the serial number on the tranny. Attached is a photo showing where I think it might be. Photo is from https://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Toyota...ally+Aspirated

Here are more drawings showing where the engine id and tranny id should be:
http://www.trav4.net/identification_...ation-259.html

I did a lot of searching of European, Japanese, and North American Rav4s at toyodiy.com. So far, I cannot turn up a part number that might match the 23-tooth speed sensor above.

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid?

From autozone.com for your Rav4: Trouble Code: P0765, A/T Shift Solenoid 'D' Malfunction (Mechanical), Possible Causes:
SL1 or SL2 is damaged, stuck "open" or stuck "closed" [SL1 = shift solenoid valve sl1, and so on]
S4 is damaged, stuck "open" or stuck "closed" [S4 = shift solenoid valve S4]
Transmission valve body is clogged, dirty or stuck

Generic troubleshooting of P0765, from https://www.transmissionrepaircostguide.com/p0765/:
Gearbox too low on transmission fluid
Transmission fluid is dirty
Wiring and/or connectors are damaged
Transmission pump is malfunctioning
Failing solenoid
Hydraulic pressure problems
Valve body problems
ECU/TCM malfunctioning

SL1 (A.K.A Solenoid A or SSA) – OEM Part 35210-21010, Denso part W0133-1939689.
SL2 (A.K.A Solenoid B or SSB) – OEM Part 35220-21010, Denso part W0133-1939691

It appears that the new VSS sold on Rockauto.com, do not come with the shaft and gear. You move your old shaft and gear to the new unit.

Just to note: a first gen Rav4 AWD with an automatic transmission has 3 VSS sensors, 2 are used by the diffs and have 2 wires, while the third one is for the speedometer and has 3 wires. Your second gen Rav4, may be the same.

Thank you very much Elle_Rav4, your help is really appreciated. I will check the number on my A/T today.

About 8 months ago I checked the transmission fluid and it was nice pink colored and free of dirt, and I was relaxed and only checked it again after I got this engine code.

Now the oil is brown and a bit dirty so it needs changing for sure. The p0765 might be due to that, but does it explain that the speedometer drops to zero sometimes?

Roundabout: other sites sell VSS without shaft+gear too.

I am on it to find out what kind of A/T and VSS it is and will write it here.
