Back up Camera Wiring help!!

Hello guys,

New to this site, found a lot of helpful information on this site. However, still a little confused about the wiring.

So I installed a JVC HU. The unit is compatible with a back up camera and has a REVERSE signal wire at the back.

This is what I tried. Connected the Yellow video wire from back of HU to Camera. The other wire on the camera I connected to the reverse lights. The positive from camera to positive on the reverse light wires. Did the same with negative. When I put it in reverse..the reverse light bulbs blew.

WHAT am i doing wrong? Do I have to connect a wire from the CAR to the wire FROM the HU that is labeled Reverse Signal as well?

THANKS guys!!

Maybe what you thought was the positive wire coming from the camera is actually the negative? You're supposed to connect the negative to a ground somewhere (i think) but not to the actual hu.

The Reverse light wires are BLACK and BLACK/WHITE . The camera has RED and BLACK. So im assuming black to black is ground/negative and the other POSITIVE/RED.

I do not have anything hooked on to the REVERSE wire on the HU. Only the video in is connected to the HU.

On the RAV 4.3, all Black/White wires are GROUND!!!

Without using a voltmeter, I am guessing the right connection is

Red on Camera goes to Black on car (+ve)
Black on Camera goes to Black/White on Car (-ve or ground)

I have a 2004 model. Would it be the same?

Do you have a voltmeter handy? That would be quickest.
I am pretty sure the wiring is the same as the 4.3.

Otherwise, there are manuals maintained by JuneBug at

I think you're ok with the red/black wires to the reverse lights, but the actual reverse wire (usually green) is supposed to go to the reverse wire switch, not the reverse lights. Sounds like you have one too many going to the reverse lights.

I know my headunit's directions say wire the reverse wire on the headunit to the reverse wire under the dash, not the reverse lights.

Yes I understand the wire from the HU goes to the reverse switch on the dash. BUT where is the reverse switch located?

Thanks

It's just the wire coming from your radio's harness, should say "reverse/back up camera" i think.
