Red face Rav4 Engine disaster

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and actually to any forum, but I have been going online to see if I could get a 2004 Rav4 Engine to replace mine. I had been having some noises but I was so busy that I didn't take my car to the mechanic. Then one day last week, my car just died & I had to get it towed to my mechanic, who said my engine was shot & I needed a new one. That brings me up to speed to your forum which I came to by mistake or by good fortune because I see that I can learn a lot from all of you. As I reviewed some of the threads, I saw some recalls. So, my question is where can I look up all the recall bulletins to see if my car year is on them? I see from some of the threads, that if the bolts get loose they can damage the engine & this might be a recall issue. I would appreciate any info you can give me since I am really new at this. Thank you so much.

To find out about recalls you can go to www.toyotaowners.com and join - you will need to enter your RAV's VIN to do so. That should reveal any recalls as well as service records entered by Toyota dealers where the vehicle has been serviced. Some recalls have time and mileage limitations. Also you might want to get a second opinion about the condition of your engine. Toyota engines generally are tough and unless maintenance and items such as checking and maintaining oil and coolant levels have been neglected or unless is has lots of miles it probably is unlikely that it is "shot" to the extent that it needs to be replaced.

Get a second opinion on whether your engine is shot or not. Too easy for the mechanic to state that and then charge you big bucks that mightn't have been necessary. Also, as you now know, pay attention to new noises!!

Just a thought.......since it's that old, is it worth repairing? The expense vs the total value of the car (in good condition) is something to consider.

Rav4 Disaster

I want to thank all of you for replying to my thread. I will take all your advice into consideration but the only option now for me is to get a new engine because my mechanic says the engine is shot. I will consider the price of getting another Rav4 instead of fixing this one, but I think the engine fix is the cheaper route since I'm on a fixed budget and I don't think I can afford anything above $5K. Thanks again for all your input, it definitely feels good that I am not alone out there & there is a family of Rav4's that looks out for you. Have a great day everyone!

Good luck, but the mechanic's apparent stating of the engine as being "shot" doesn't mean anything without more specifics. Most forum responders have suggested that you get a second opinion. The actual problem could be something relatively simple and inexpensive to repair. How many miles do you have on your RAV? What tests did your mechanic undertake in order to render his verdict? Of course it is possible that the engine needs to be replaced, but a mechanic's generic opinion doesn't state what the problem is or problems are. Some of us have been taken to the cleaners, so to speak, by mechanics who were either interested only in how much money they could extract from the customer, were incompetent, or were simply too lazy to undertake proper diagnostic procedures. At the least, the mechanic should have read the fault codes from the RAV's diagnostic system.

If indeed a new engine is required, consider a used engine from a breakers. There are a number of them that specialize in used Japanese engines.

mannnnn! i just bought a 2004 RAV4 only a week ago. had under 130,000km.
engine just blew. had to get it towed off highway. something about compression.
later in the week i will get more details.
so far they gave me a quote of $3700 canadian to replace engine with a used one, that they don't even really know status of.
gonna wait a few days and shop around before making any decisions.
