Transmission Problem: Hard Reverse and No 1st gear - also sluggish acceleration

I have a U241E in my RAV4 and I've just started trying to diagnose it. I have tried 2 ECU's (one known to be working fine with the same transmission - no codes - no shift issues). However the ECU seems to not change anything. So I assume there is probably something physically wrong.

There was an error code for Solenoid B. So I dropped the pan (fair bit of black dust but not much metal at all), changed the filter, oil and SL2. Upon testing it the reverse was a bit smoother but still had a strong jerk and still no 1st gear (when put into 1). When starting in drive it is sluggish to accelerate (maybe starting in 2nd or 3rd?).

I was going through this thread: https://www.rav4world.com/forums/88-...ast-2nd-2.html

And also I found this manual shifting procedure to try: http://www.trav4.net/manual_shifting_test-655.html

As well as resetting the transmission memory (a/t initialization). https://www.rav4world.com/forums/99-4-3-mechanical/92414-have-dtc-p0746-pressure-control-solenoid-2.html

And I'm thinking I should try taking a look at the clutch packs and hard parts without extracting the transmission. I'm not too familiar with the U241E but I have worked on other transmissions. Does this seem viable? Is there a good reference for what might cause problems with R and 1 gears -- maybe a sprag failing?

Or does anyone have some good starting points? Thanks!

Here's an update. I used Techstream to clear the transmission memory and then road tested it. While it shifts smoother now, the R and 1 are still problematic. When parked pointing downhill and putting it into 1 the car seems to lock up like the parking pawl is engaged and accelerating won't move it either. And R is still a fairly hard shift.

Looking at the U241E diagram: https://www.wittrans.com/parts?type=U241E

It appears I could get all the way to the Low/Reverse clutch area with just the back cover off. So I'm going to take a look this week. If anyone is familiar with this transmissions and has any other ideas I'd love to hear them. (BTW - no error codes are present). Or should I focus on the valve body?

Thanks

P.S. I also found this good document about U140 and U241 differences and modes of operation https://akpp19.ru/files/toyota/U-140E,U241E.pdf
