Convert fwd to 4wd

I have a 1998 2-door (convertible) which is fwd. I am thinking of converting it to 4wd.
I bought another rav4 with 4wd and was going to swap the parts.
However, I am wondering if the transmission requires computer controls? The 4wd is a 97.
I am concerned if I have to swap ecu's that it is going to report to the smog check that its a 97 with a different vin.

If anyone can help I appreciate it. Probably make a video of the conversion for my youtube channel.

AFAIK CA does only OBD scan for error codes as smog check.

I also read somewhere that VIN became available over OBD after car makers implemented CAN interface. I believe, this happened after 2003 and in case of RAV4- starting from 2006 model year. Basically, it is very unlikely either of ECUs on your cars are capable of producing VIN over OBD.

The engine block is different between the 2wd and 4wd models. The 4wd engine block is drilled and threaded for the transaxle to mount.

Is your RAV4 automatic or manual?

My "Rav2" (2doors, 2wd) is automatic and so is the awd donor. I can also use the awd engine too, in fact plan to rebuild it before putting it in my rav2,
which has 310k miles (i note the donor has 385k miles, so needs rebuilt).

Good to know the vin isn't part of the ecu for these years. still want to understand if the wiring is compatible.

The following are a few I found at https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/sho...=4123991#89661
I would recommend going to the sites and entering both vehicles VIN numbers and search the parts

SXA10 is a 4WD 3d-door model
COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL - 8966142391 1997 to 1999, 4wd, automatic/manual, federal
COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL - 8966142512 1998 to 2000, 4wd, automatic/manual, federal

SXA15 is a FWD 3d-door model
COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL - 8966142371 1997 to 1999, 2wd, automatic/manual, federal
COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL - 8966142492 1998 to 2000, 2wd, automatic/manual, federal
COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL - 8966142411 1997 to 1999, 2wd, automatic/manual, California

It's difficult to look up the wiring harness information without the VINs.
