Transmission for 3sGTE swap

Hello all!!
After MANY years of having my gen4 3sgte engine laying around... I'll finally start the project of swapping it into my rav4. Wooof

Engine will be taken to a shop to prepare it and fix any details it may have and then it will be swapped into the car.

One thing though... right now the plan is to install it using the standard awd rav4 transmission... however... I know there are *better* options but I don't know what they are...

Anyone has any idea on which car had a better transmission to use with this engine? Either stronger or with better gear ratios or easier to use? My idea is to use this car as a regular street rav4 but with added power.. thats it... I don't want to make a monster out of it or race it or whatever...

Is it maybe worthwile spending some time looking for a celica transmission or a lexus 3sge one or something like that?

Thanks!

The main thing is that you need to upgrade the clutch as the OEM Rav can't handle the additional power for too long before failing. A Celica awd (185, 205) or Caldina trans might give you better ratio's for application of the power though. Interested to hear other inputs as well

That's exactly what I waas thinking... I do know Toyota made the Rav4 gearbox a little "lowerer" in ratios to give it's trucklet some more toque/power and not so much speed.

However with the new engine it does make sense to have a gearbox with longer gear ratios that will have better use in regular street usage. Even now my 1st gear only last less than 1second before having to change gear... I guess with a 3sgte engine you probably have to start the car in 2nd gear with a stock gearbox...

Is your RAV4 AWD? If it is you also need to consider upgrading the rear differential assembly.

It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I've wondered about driveability on the stock trans too, 1st gear must be pointless with a turbo unless you utilized it for offroad? Slightly off topic but I wish there was a way to make the vacuum actuated center diff locker work on the 3sgte swap.

The rear differential don't need to be upgraded. It's the same internals/gears than a GT4/Alltrac Celica. But installing new diff mount bushings would be a good idea!

2001 with 2.4 swap + RAV4.1 transmission (4.93 final drive ratio), RAV4.1 locking center differential, Lexus RX300 limited slip rear diff , Celica GT4 stage 1 SPEC clutch kit, 3" lift kit, Old Man Emu coil-springs, sway-bars delete and BFG MT KM2 235/70/16.

The GT4s all have torsion differentials which were a very rare option on the RAV4.1. The standard rear differential may not take the torque.

From 1986 to 1993 (ST165 and ST185), there was no rear LSD. The torsen ONLY came in the rare RC Carlos Sainz special edition (1991-1992). From 1994 (ST205), then most had the torsen rear differential.

Those without LSD share the same gears and internals than RAV4.1 and RAV4.2.

The RAV4 Torsen (type 2) is different because GT4 had a type 1 Torsen. The type 2 is a little less efficient (more progressive torque transfer), BUT the type 1 is much weaker by it's design.
