Locking Diff 1st Gen

Hello all,

Been off of here for a few years after wrecking my last RAV.

Just picked up another and now have a question.

My last was an awd auto with the locking diff.

My ‘new’ one is also an auto awd but without the lock switch.

I have a chance to pick up locking doodads from a scrapyard on the cheap.

The scrap Rav is a ‘99 same as mine. But it’s a stick.

Now to the questions.

I would like to get the lock swapped onto mine. Is it too different seeing as it’s a stick vs auto? Is the swap feasible?

And how much work am I talking about?

I have some base mechanic skills. Not worried about getting the parts off the doner. But getting it all installed on mine might be done by my my wrench if I find it to be too much.

So what am I looking at work wise?

And what parts am I pulling off the donor other than the dash switch?

I’ll admit I could google it a bit more but I am kinda excited at the prospect and asking here would be more efficient.....

I was under the impression that Ravs equipped with automatic transmissions did not have the centre differential lock switch on the dash (there was a ECT switch in its place, which put the gearbox in "sport" or "normal" mode).

In the first generation Rav4 only the manual transmissions used the locking center differential. Automatics used a coupler, that was sort of automatic.

As far as I have heard to change to a manual transmission you will need to change a lot of stuff, even the ECU.
