2011 door lock query

Hi - my daughter's 2011 automatically locked her out when she left her keys in it, as instructed, by Jiffylube tech. AAA had to come to the rescue. I would think a smart car would NOT allow your car to lock when the keys are in it. Any insights into this? Thanks, Steve

It's a strange "safety feature" where the car will automatically lock itself after a minute, I believe. Our Rav locked our 1 year old baby in our car when it was 90 degrees on my wife. She says she put the baby and keys in the car, then put shopping bags in the back. In between closing back and walking to the front the car locked. Had to break the window to open the door. FYI the small window near c pillar in the back is actually more expensive than a door window.

I suggest you make a spare key to hide on the outside of the car if this happens again. Just make a duplicate key without the fob that cost around $2-$5. I have a spare key hidden on the outside just in case I go to a lake 5 hours away and lock the keys inside. I keep a another spare with the fob hidden inside the car in case I lose the fob key for an emergency. I once locked the doors with the keys in the ignition in another car when I was 2.5 hours away from home. Lucky for me it was an older vehicle which I could use a coat hanger to unlock the door lock.

My 2010 Base works like this: if you unlock with the fob and DON'T open any of the 5 doors within about a minute, it will re-lock all doors. However, if you unlock with the fob and open any of the 5 doors within that minute, all doors will stay unlocked forever.
Anything different from that indicates a problem with the system.

My '11 RAV4 Base door locking system operates exactly as ravenuer explains. What the JiffyLube tech supposedly instructed is unclear and in any even their advice regarding such matters may or may not be accurate.

I beleive my daughters 2009 base does as described as well. Unlock with fob and no doors opened, after a delay it relocks.. Seems a key detector would be prudent but...
