PCM / ECM / ECU Reprogramming by Toyota Dealer

I'm looking to buy a(nother) 3rd Gen - 2006-2012 RAV4 V6 AWD model (I currently have an '07 bought new).

I always get the Carfax* (and/or the Autocheck) VIN Report, and frequently notice that under the Comments section on the Carfax the following notes:

Quote:
- Engine/powertrain computer/module reprogrammed
- PCM reprogrammed

Does anyone know what the reprogramming 'update' is doing/fixing?

I would guesstimate that this update occurs on most RAVs around 100K miles or it started in 2013-2014? I'm basing it on the info in the Carfax.....which means most RAVs are OUT of warranty and only get updated if they happen to visit the dealer.

I don't recall if mine has been updated, as I've only taken it to the dealer for the (2many) Recalls and a waterpump replacement (another common repair I see on the Carfax reports @ about 100K miles ), since new.

All the other maintenance is done @ the local indie shop.

*Carfax vs. Autocheck: The Carfax usually shows dealer and/or repair shop ('Jiffy Lube' type) service/repair/maintenance info, in addition to the normal Registration, Title changes, etc. I rarely (ever?) see anything on the Autocheck related to service.

TANGENT:
I do think the local dealer did 'something' while fixing a Recall as I lost the ability to use the Cruise Control lever to slow the RAV down - yes, just like using the brakes - about 5 years ago.
Per the Owner's Manual:
Quote:
RESETTING TO A SLOWER SPEED
Push the lever down in the “− SET” direction
and hold it. Release the lever when
the desired speed is attained. While the
lever is held down, the vehicle speed will
gradually decrease.
A sound may occur due to brake operation
while the vehicle speed is decreasing.
This does not indicate a malfunction.

My cruise control on my '11 works as described in your quote from the Owner's Manual. But it isn't "just like using the brakes." The slowdown is less rapid than when using the brakes although there is some lighter braking action under certain circumstances. Don't know anything about the chip reprogramming mentioned in the post. I haven't had any sort of notice about that from Toyota.

As part of a service campaign, Toyota has been re-programming the computers with "Smart Stop", a feature that cuts engine power when the brake and accelerator are both pressed.

Help RAV4World members help you by providing your car's operating location in your profile page. Climate can cause a RAV4 in Dallas Wisconsin to experience a different set of issues when compared to the same model in Dallas Texas.

If that is the reprogramming mentioned in the first post I understand that whatever needed to be done was for models prior to my '11, which would explain why I haven't had any sort of notice.
