OEM vs AM brakes for 2011 RAV4 Sport

Hello,

I am going to do my first DIY brake-pad replacement.

I am considering going with aftermarket brakes because they are somewhat cheaper than OEM ones. Are there any concerns with AM brake pads and compatibility with the rotors?

The 2 pads I am currently considering are the Wagner (Thermoquiet or OEX) and the Bosch (Quietcast) full Ceramic pads.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks.

Avi

Better quality brake pads have a split in the middle of the pad. This helps remove brake dust from the rotor. If both brands have this feature, then it's just a toss of the coin, unless someone with personal experience with one of those brands chimes in.

Have a good day.

I would never cheap-out on brakes or tires. Use the search function as there are lots of info on here on that subject.
I'd only use Toyota OEM or Advics brand. Advics makes the OEM brakes for Toyota. There are other brands mentioned on here that people have been happy with, so do a search.

Ah. Went through this just last week.
Go OEM.

It's actually only a few bucks more. But you know you're getting decent to good quality parts.

Toyota will also help you get everything you need. I made the mistake of buying rotors via amazon. Although the fit finder said they fit. They were 3rd row rav4 rotors. Which are thicker. Set me back a day on brakes. Ended up going OEM. $76cad amazon vs $99cad from Toyota.

As for pads. I went with Bosch. But next time. Just going straight to Toyota for everything.

Hello,

I checked Rockauto and they have the Advics OEM pads, but I see 2 different models:

ADVICS AD1210 {#044650R010, 0446542160}
Front; Exc. 3rd Row Seating; W/275mm Rotor

ADVICS AD1211 {#0446502230, 0446542150, 0446542180}
Front; W/3rd Row Seating; W/296mm Rotor; EV, XLE, Limited Platinum

I can't tell which one is the right one. My car is a 2011 RAV4 Sport V6 AWD (VIN# JTMRK4DV)

Per the Toyota Website (parts.toyota.com), the correct part# is 0446542180, which matches with the ADVICS AS1211 model#, but I am not sure (my car isn't EV, XLE or Limited).

Do different size rotors call for different pads? Sorry about the noob questions. This is my first DIY brake pad change.

Thanks a lot!

Well, according to what you posted, the 1210 is for two row Ravs and the 1211 is for three row Ravs. Which one you got?

Yeah....I just noticed that little detail. Mine is the 2 row one....so that's settled.

Folks,

I think I have everything I need for my first DIY pad change.

Regarding the rear brake pads on my RAV4: is there any reason why replacing the rear pads are tougher? I am fairly confident that I can replace the front pads, but I was reading somewhere else that rear pads are trickier.

Also: what is the recommended thickness at which we need to replace the pads?

I am going with Advics, but I noticed that the brake pad clips are not included. Need to figure out replacement clips. Surprising given that all the AM pads ship with clips.

Thanks!

"Regarding the rear brake pads on my RAV4: is there any reason why replacing the rear pads are tougher?"

Probably because there is a small drum brake (parking brake) in the rotor's center cylinder.
