I was at the dealer today and heard this new noise. I'm taken aback at just how obnoxious it is. It might as well have a "BOEEP-BOEEP-BOEEP" backup beeper like on a commercial truck.

I predict this will be the most often requested mod for the HV - to turn this crap off.

Extremely doubtful Toyota will expose themselves to this potential for liability. Not that I enjoy it but I understand; I can live with it. It would be nice if they could project the sound backwards to make it less audible in the cab. Maybe a megaphone mounted behind the shark fin. I wonder what factors prompted the evolution of this particular warning sound. Perhaps it’s aimed at the atavistic fear of jets ingrained in our DNA.

I do wish I didn’t have to bear with the screen warning every time I start the car. And look at the non-removable warnings on the visors, in multiple languages to boot. I wonder how many folks have read the visor warnings? I will, one day, promise.

^^
When the proximity warning systems first came out on the Prius models, people immediately went and found the little speaker emitter and disconnected it. I expect we will see the same approach taken with this. (Assuming there's no software fix for it.)

I guess you don't have one. On the Hybrid models, you can't rev the engine with the throttle. The throttle only responds when in gear. Doubt you want to stand on the gas while in reverse.

I hate the sound too, not because it bothers me but from the outside it sounds like a failing transmission. But you get used to it in time.

The backup noise is there only when the gas engine is off. Before backing up, blip the gas peddle enough to turn on the gas engine.

Is your XLE a Hybrid? If it is, try revving your engine in neutral. It will not! You have to have it in gear. If you try to go fast enough in reverse just to silence the 'warning' sound, please don't do it in my neighborhood. My initial response was to the comment "Just blip the throttle to get the gas engine to run". If you're backing up and the traction batteries are low enough, yes the engine will run. If your XLE is not a Hybrid then your comment is in the wrong forum.

OK, when I've erred, I admit it. While in park I pressed it, nothing. Then I pressed it to the floor and it started. But you still can't rev it up (hybrid), and that defeats to some extent the reason for a Hybrid in the 1st place. But I admit that pressing the throttle far enough will start the gas engine in park. Guess I'm not in the habit of flooring it.

Yes, I have an XLE Hybrid, and the gas engine starts up when I blip the throttle while the gear selector is in PARK. Try it.

I did some preliminary search and ran across feedback that using a programming adapter the sound can be reduced (volume change). I do think its a bit excessive.

I also have a 2016 Prius, and it makes safety noise forward and reverse at low speed. There used to be a reversing beeping alert (inside and outside the car as well). Really obnoxious. I killed that one with a program mod. You have to be careful though, changes like that are not easily reversed if something goes wrong.

Customization changes done with Techstream and Carista can be reverted just as easily as they were changed to begin with, made changes using them on '15 Prius, '18 Prius Prime and '15, '16 and '19 Rav4s. ;)

I guess the hardware is Carista and software is Techstream...
