I just bought a 16gb Sandisk Cruzer Fit USB flash drive and would like my husband to copy our music files onto the stick. I have no idea how to do this  Our music is stored as mp3 files. Can anyone provide instructions of what we need to do to get them to work in the RAV4. Does each albumn need to be in its own folder? thank you.

I have a 2012 Rav4 and all I did was drag and drop the mp3 files from my computer to my USB and then plugged it in. Worked right away. I think you can put mp3's in folders if you want, but you don't need to.

music folders..

No need to format; it should work fine as you get it.
I like to empty the stick of all files shipped with it.
Folders make it easier to search for music on the display.
I have about 45 cd's worth of mp3s, each with a folder naming the artist/album, and in the folder, the mp3 itself with the track name. DragNdrop as novarav4 said.
That's it.

I have a 64gb Sandisk USB flash drive for the RAV. The drive needs to be formatted FAT16, FAT32 or exFAT(mine came formatted exFAT) . I have over 7,000 songs organized in folders first by artist, then by album. Took a while for the RAV to index all of that but works beautifully! Just make sure
all of your mp3 ID3 Tags are in order or you won't be able to take advantage of voice commands.

If your USB drive comes formatted NTFS, it will NOT WORK! You will need to reformat though I don"t believe Sandisk drives come pre-formatted NTFS so you shouldn't need to worry.

I loaded up my music collection of 5200 songs on a 32GB stick and it takes forever for it to do anything. :zzzz:
I loaded them all into the root.........maybe that's the issue?

I notice the manual says maximum of 250 songs per folder......would that include the root, I wonder?

How long does it take for yours to load?

I was going to do a direct copy from my iTunes library (artist/album/song folders) but thought it might be to many folders/subfolders for the system to wade through.

Thanks for everyone's help. My 2013 rav4 comes in 2 weeks and I will test the USB stick then. I got the jbl stereo upgrade so hopefully everything goes smoothly

I use Windows Media Player 12 to rip CDs to mp3s, organize my music by type, and ratings I give to the pieces I like (stars 1-5) You can then make play lists easily of your favorite music by organizing the ratings column with the 5 stars at the top. Simply drag all the ones you want over to a new play list. Shuffle the list so they don't play in any one order, if you want, then save the list. Next, insert your USB player or its card and synchronize it to the play list and you are ready to go.. it's really easy and fun.

FYI.......

I reinstalled all my songs on my USB stick using the standard iTunes format of Artist/album/song and it worked perfect.......The RAV loaded all 5200 songs in about 1 minute.

Guess you can't put over 250 songs in any folder or the root as it will choke on it.

I love using the USB stick......I got a 32GB Sandisk low profile so you can't even tell a USB stick is inserted at all.
Nice!

I really wanted one of those low profile USB sticks too but they didn't come in 64GB unfortunately. Oh well.

just curious

Just curious, why more people don't just use an iPod? too expensive? just hate Apple in general? Not looking to start a fight here, just wondering, I just find it so easy, put stuff on iTunes, load on the iPod, leave it in my car and it's fine. (No, I don't work for Apple!!)

(UPDATE on this: HA! Now of course it's NOT just fine, though we still haven't figured out if it's the car or the iPod.)

I guess I'll answer your question with a question......
Why leave an expensive iPod sitting in your vehicle tethered to the USB port?

A USB stick is cheap and easy to use and doesn't tie up something like an iPod when it's unnecessary. Also, with the mini-USB flash drive it's absolutely invisible and doesn't have any cords dangling.
Not sure what can be easier than copying some music onto a flash drive......don't need iTunes or any other program.

Between my wife and I we have (3) iPods, (2) iPads, and (1) iPhone 5.........so no, I don't hate Apple but find the USB stick a better alternative.

Ok, yes, valid point! And that's why I got the USB/aux jack put inside the center console, so now it's all out of sight. One of the guys on here, or there's probably more than one, but just one I know of, had done it himself and told me how to do it, very easy, but when I had my sub-woofer put in, I had the installer move the jack for me at the same time.

Oh, and I had bought the iPod specifically for the car anyway.

I have a 2012 though, not sure if things are in the same place in the 2013. Many cars have the port hidden away to begin with, which I think makes more sense.

One can Bluetooth music from the iPhone. Keep it in your pocket or purse. It syncs when you start the car. Simple.
Agreed....but it sucks your battery down quite quickly and would never hold my music collection. I have a long commute and don't' like charging my iPhone more than I already have to.

The USB flash drive is the cheapest, easiest, and most anti-theft way to go IMHO.
I put 5300 songs on my 32GB flash, set it on random, and I'm set for quite a long time.

Bottom line is do what works for ya.......I think we can all agree, the USB port is awesome no matter how you use it.

We'll be picking up our RAV4 next week - This is the same stick I got, for the same reasons. It's simply invisible from outside the vehicle.

Indeed, my 32gb sandisk just got here today. Now to get it all full of music and hit the road!

I'm very curious to see how it handles and moves through folders. I typically group them into folders by artist and album, and will be interested to see how fast it moves between folders once their loaded.

Using iMac to load USB stick

Hi all, found out an interesting thing when I was loading a USB stick with music. I initially loaded about 10 folders on the stick and it played great in the Rav4. I then went back and loaded about 100 folders but when I tried to play the stick in the Rav I got a message that there were no compatible files on the stick. Long story short, I tried everything but ultimately discovered that if you delete anything on the stick you must also empty the trash can (which is a hidden folder on the stick) or the stick won't work. I was able to replicate this by deleting a file and then tried to play the stick but got the error message. Emptied the trash and all was well. It didn't seem to matter that I had cover art files etc. as the music played as long as I emptied the trash. It's a Mac thing!:)
