Hello everyone!

Since my father got a Range Rover Sport diesel last year, I have been very interested in getting a diesel vehicle. Unfortunately, I am in college, so I was left with the option of getting a reliable car, so I opted for the Rav4. I have been reading and watching a lot of videos about the Rav4 diesel offered in other countries. They offer a 2.0L or 2.2L (1AD and 2AD-FTV/FHV) variant mated to either a manual or 6 speed automatic transmission. The automatic gearbox is coincidentally the commonly used U660F gearbox usually mated to the 2GR-FE 3.5 V6 engine. I usually see these engines online for ~$1000-2000 depending on condition and U660F gearbox available for less than $1000. How unfeasible would this project to take on when I have the time and funds in the future? I know it is MUCH more complicated than just buying those two components, but is it that big of a task considering that these engines and transmission are designed to fit in this vehicle?

Thank you!

Since you posted under 4.4 what year is your RAV? The V-6 was only available in 4.3 which is 2006-2012. Also the V-6 never had a 6 speed automatic in North America, 5 speed only. Sounds to me like much wasted effort and money of which you will need huge amounts. When you're able, buy what you want and forget the Frankenstein RAV4 you're thinking about.

I have a 4.4 I think I'll just stick to the good ol' 2.5. I'm always curious on how feasible some projects are. I see that the Russian market offers this trim (2.2 diesel with 6 speed auto) in left hand drive, so I thought it would be a simple engine swap if the day my 2.5 decides to die.

Thanks!

Reports from both Hyundai and Kia (same company) are that they will offer diesel Santa Fe and Sorento in the '19 model year, and Mazda continues to promise a '18 diesel CX-5 (have lied about this in the past, so it's far from a sure bet).

But transforming a North America gasoline RAV4 into a diesel version would be a technical and cost nightmare and if something went wrong with it there basically would be zero support.
