Bought our RAV4 SE couple of months ago and during a thunderstorm the vehicle started hydroplaning from the rear. I was doing 55mph on a newly repaved 4 lane highway. These OEM tires that came with the car (Bridgestone Ecopia HL 422 plus) are junk. The rain grooves are very narrow and personally these tires are dangerous in the rain. I want to swap out the tires and the best tires I have researched are the Bridgestone Dueller HL Alenza plus and 2 Michellin tires. Just wondering from the good folks on this site who have the SE model what you would reccomend and what you currently have on your vehicle.

Thanks for your imputs..

If you're hydroplaning then you're driving too fast. If you want to drive fast in heavy rain I would recommend an open shoulder tire as they allow a lot of water or snow to pass out the side. I'm a big fan of Hankook tires for my suvs. Lastly the stock tires are not even close to dangerous...you're just driving dangerously.

Rav4systems3, I was doing the speed limit at the time and was not driving "fast" for the road conditions. Mind you that I am a professional truck driver with 22 years experience driving big rigs and always being aware of my surroundings and the changing weather conditions especially when it comes to you 4 wheelers out there.. I don't drive dangerously as you say and yes these tires are dangerous. There are sites like Tire Rack that have comments from other drivers that have these tires on their vehicles and they say the same thing about hydroplaning. The new Bridgestone Ecopia HL 422 plus have been redesigned with wider grooves then the OEM. Sounds to me that they might have been aware of the problems with these tires. I will take a look at the Hankook tires also. Thanks for the imput..

No problem with hydroplaning with the Bridgestone Duellers on my RAV4 and we can have a lot of rain here, as much as 130 inches each year. I drive at the speed limit in rain unless we are having a torrential downpour.

Wow, I'm impressed..... NOT
Sorry I've seen way to many moron semi/truck drivers to even think that statement actually means something >:D

I've been driving professionally for a long time. I assure you the idiots and morons don't last long. If he's been driving 22 he's sure to know what he's doing. While I don't brag about my skills and qualifications I do my job well. I generally don't give much weight to those who brag about being good at something while assuming others are not, but I'll give the op some leeway LOL.

IMO, no matter what tires you have, when driving a car/SUV at 55mph and hitting a large puddle, will save you from hydroplaning. Loaded semis on the other hand won't even feel it. Totally different driving experience in rain between the two...

The only vehicle that won't hydroplane is this:

Also consider Goodyear Assurance Weatheready. I've been researching replacement tires for my son's GF's Hyundai Tucson and I plan to recommend these to keep her safe in New England winters.

Yes, I second the recommendation for these. I have them on a 2016 Rav4 and they are very good in heavy rain . They also are of a new breed of all season (3 peak rating ?)that have a more serious winter portion to their rating. We do a lot of ski travel in the winter and they are very good at that as well.

I had the same surprising hydroplaning when I purchased the car new but kept them. Looking for replacements now. Other than the said problem the tires wore very well, but I'd be hardpressed to recommend them.
