I'm a long time Toyota fan looking to replace my 2011 Highlander that has 162k.

The reviews on Edmunds are horrifically bad, I mean dozens and dozens. Even the professional reviews note how awful the transmission is.

I feel really stuck because the CRV is having major engine problems and the Rav4 has the worst reviewed transmission I've ever seen.

If you dont believe me head on over there and check it out.

What is going on here? Are all these reviews fake?

I need to buy soon but....have major concerns.
By the Hybrid!

makes you wonder how much testing Toyota did not do before they started selling the cars. seems using 10 cars for 40,000 miles each would have revealed the jerking, yet they still sold / released them?????????
and does anyone ask the project manager "hey hows that new transmission doing?
lot of time wasted by owners and dealers trying to fixit or get it fixed without having a clue. and I always ask, what was wrong with last years transmission (I like 4 speeds)

I'm not here to slam Toyota. I really need to buy soon and feel like they released this early and rushed it....and CRV has issues too.

Numbers glad you aren't having a problem but lots here are, and on other forums too.

I find it quite strange all dealers have lots of gas models sitting and rebates...the numbers speak for themselves...

I hope they fix it soon because I need to buy. Taking a look at cx5 I guess...and anxiously waiting for a fix.
Buy the Hybrid if your worried about the tranny.

But that tranny is a CVT.
Not really, it's not a conventional problematic belt and pulley CVT, Toyota calls it an eCVT, it's a planetary gear power split device which has nothing in common with other CVTs mechanically, it's all gears (and electric motors), so it's extremely reliable.

Based on my personal experience, the CVT in the new RAV4 Hybrid performs much better than previous versions. Acceleration feels just as fast as automatics, but w/o the gear shift points. The Hybrid is faster from 0-60 mph than the gas model.
Actually there's not much difference in the 0-60 time for the 4th and 5th gen HVs, the 2016 was faster than the gas model as well, I had a '16 Ltd HV, it was pretty quick compared to the '15 Ltd I had.
