I am trying to figure out the capacity. I don't see why rav4 hybrid needs 14.5 gallon tank. Extra weight. 12 gallon tank would be adequate. Better mpg.
You are one person out of over 7 billion on earth. Toyota made a choice that was not based on your definition of "need". 14.5 has been printed in multiple brochures, press releases, web postings, etc. That would be one hell of a typo. Accept reality rather than going on your belief of what it should be. It is 14.5.

Just fill up less gas and your concern is solved. The extra weight is negligible though on mpg. Spare tire adds more weight then 2.5 gallons extra

I put 13.777 gallons in my tank the last time I filled up, so your 12 gallon assumption is wrong...
On a 2019? Tank size 14.5 gallons. Reserve tank 2.2 gallons announced--toyota told me it's actually higher than that. So at a minimum you would have to have a near 16 gallon tank. And none are that big--might want to alert your state gas meter readers and ask for some money back from your gas station!

I also JUST bought this car with 0 miles on the odometer. I’ve had to fill up twice so far and the odometer is now at 820 miles. Total average MPG is 41.9. How is this possible???
It's likely your car had a tank that wasn't close to full when the venting system shut the pump off. See other thread for discussion on that problem. Combined with the known and some unknown amount of reserve fuel in the tank, that would explain it.

You either got told wrong or don’t understand the fuel system as published in the owner’s manual:

The 14.5-gallon fuel tank capacity includes the 2.2-gallon published fuel reserve. The fuel reserves in NOT in addition to the 14.5-gallon tank size. Automakers are required to publish a fuel tank size for vehicles that they sell. The reported fuel tank size reflects the amount of usable fuel.

It's the same gas station, BJs, I've been using for years and I fill up my Odyssey there too. So the pump is okay. I am confused too though as I stated in my post in the drive to 600 mile thread. Post #14 in https://www.rav4world.com/threads/the-drive-to-the-600-mile-club.300785/

Have a 2019 Canadian xle.
My sis has a 2019 Japanese le.
Both have 4 inch display. Both act same with regards to gas tank. Both the needle goes past the full mark on first click. The 7 inch display has different fuel Guage looks and when superimposed on the one on 4 inch display might be bigger ? (humm calibration).
For the 4 inch display, my observations:
1) From E to half tank it is close to 6 gallons.
2) From 1/4 tick mark to 1/2 tick mark it is close to 3 gallons.
3) From half to F it is close to 5 gallons.
4) From half to past F (1st click on pump) it is close to 6 gallons.(should really be where the F should be tick marked imo).
5) Calculations based on AVG MPG and trip odometer are very accurate. DTE estimate starts out accurate but towards end has a bias of 30 miles.

Run 1: filled tank until first click.
Guage past F as usual. Next drove 401 miles. MPG AVG 42.2.
Theoretical calculation says I used 9.5 gallons.
To verify at pump first click at 9.3 second (just to be sure) at 9.66.
Guage past F as usual.

Run 2: Fuel Guage past F as usual.
Trip odometer 407.4
AVG MPG 39.4 (LEAD FOOT)
Theory: 10.3 Gallons
At Pump: 10.2 Gallons and Guage is past F as usual.
145038

145039
So yes the tank is approximately 14.5 gallons. From E to past F is approximately 12 gallons. Reserve to save fuel pump and owners is around 2 to 2.5 gallons.

This is very helpful, though disappointing. I'm one who was elated by the prospect of a 580+ mile driving range. Here’s another issue I face: I live in NJ where you are NOT ALLOWED to pump your own gas, which means they stop at the first click every time, or I have to press the guy to try to get another gallon in the tank. Overall just frustrating. I’m getting the MPG I expected which is great, but I’m heading to the pump far more frequently than I thought I would.
