This morning I was in the process of parking my 2020 rav4 Limited (with tech pkg) to attend a yoga class which is in a shopping center across from the local university. As I was backing into a space with no other vehicles in site, I was moving very slowly but still backing into the parking space. The first thing odd I noticed was the audible warning and flashing warning in my side mirror (perhaps it was my rearview mirror?) and I was a little confused as no cars were still in site. Suddenly, the car auto-braked, startling me...then I noticed a student apparently heading to class, with his head down and buried in his phone as he walked right behind my car as I was backing up. So the reverse braking feature proved itself and thank god I didnt hit him. And In typical student behavior, he just kept walking to class, apparently completely oblivious that he almost walked into the path of a (albeit slowly moving) vehicle. I was a little shook up by this incident, but extremely glad I had chosen the model of rav4 which included reverse auto-braking (I believe the Limited model). Thank you Toyota!

But for some reason, one time I was slowly backing up and a pedestrian walked close right behind my car and nothing happened. I only saw her in the rear camera and stopped backing. Don't know why it didn't respond that one time. No warning, no beeps.

I found out it works when someone tried to slip by me to get into a parking space while I was backing. yeah, I’m not sure why the auto-braking detected the pedestrian behind me, but glad it did. The only other time this feature kicked in is the first couple times I pulled into my garage and it stopped me before I got too close to the garbage can (in front of car). Even at slow speeds the auto-braking is pretty jarring.
 
This also happen to me i was backing out of a parking spot and my car beeped amd stopped. I didnt see anything anywhere, then all of a sudden a guy walks by my car. Was at night too. These safety features are awesome.

Yup, unfortunately it works too good, have had this sort of false trigger happen several times with adjacent thru traffic in parking lots.:censored:
 
It's a horrible sound! It's just awful and sounds like something breaking on the car. I wish it were more of an alert and not sounding like some catastrophic failure.
Between that horrible sound the car makes when applying the brakes AND the then quickly dawning realization you nearly hit someone or something, look on the bright side. It's really a great recipe for a no frills cardio workout without moving a muscle. Thumpa thumpa thumpa!

It is a horrible sound (e.g. auto-braking), but compared to hitting a pedestrian or another vehicle, I’ll take the jarring sound.

I like the feature and I agree it is an adrenaline rush. I just don't like the sound when the auto reverse braking is applied. I have a friend with a Volvo and it's just a long beep sound, so much better.
 
2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE

I made the mistake of putting a box on top of my hitch rack - trying to reverse was impossible without having to disable the RCTA and Pre-collision Braking System (just toggle on your screen to disable), but remember - when you shut off ignition, it resets to "ON". Good times. Technology is not FOOL-Proof.
 
I've been parking my 2020 RAV4 in my garage, which is smallish but fine for position it to the right side, then having fine space to get out and access stuff in front of the vehicle. Last Fall I "inherited" a bunch of stuff from a friend who moved away and its piled up in front of the RAV with enough room for the garage door to close behind it. With my old car I could park it with my eyes closed. I similarly can do it with the RAV but the auto front braking stopped me like 5-6" from the aforementioned pile. It works well. I might actually setup a short stop sign after I clear the junk out in the Spring and let the RAV stop at exactly the right spot!

If I could just get the beeping to quiet down a bit though.

I'd like to know what the mechanism is that actually applies the brakes. An electric or hydraulic motor? It makes a really horrific noise, like the car is backing over rocks or something. It sure gets your attention.
 
But technically, what's the mechanism the ABS uses to apply the brakes? Do people hear that sound whenever individual wheel braking is used to help stop a spinning wheel in an AWD situation like climbing a hill on ice? I'm afraid I haven't kept up on the technology as much as I should've since I retired from wrenching years ago. It also makes me wonder how well most dealership techs understand how to repair these systems they've gotten so complex now.
 
So the system has a pump, a motor to drive it and sets of solenoid valves distribute the fluid pressure to whichever wheels are slipping. In the case of stopping the car to avoid a collision, it activates the brakes on ALL the wheels. That pump and all those solenoids are what must make all the racket. It sure is loud.
