My wife is looking to replace her 13 year old RAV4 that we purchased new in 2007 that runs fine and has about 150,000 miles on it.

She wants the 2020 XLE AWD with just one option: the XLE All Weather Pkg with heated seats and steering wheel, etc. for $925 and only two exterior colors: Lunar Rock 1st choice or Ruby Red 2nd choice. She does not want black or beige interior which leaves grey. It seems that black interior makes up about 80 – 90% of the interiors.

That combination pretty much doesn’t exist around upstate NY.

Typically, multiple additional extra cost factory options are the only ones available on the RAV4’s in our area. She doesn't like the Moon/Sun Roof that comes with the XLE Convenience Pkg ($1265) with the Moon Roof, Power Lift Gate etc., or the All Weather Floor Mats, or Door Guards, or Wheel Locks and such options.

We have visited local area Toyota dealers but have not test driven one or checked to see how easy that lift gate is to operate. She’s 77 years old but no weakling but she might consider that power lift gate if it is a bit difficult to open and close. Of course, the moon roof, etc comes with it.

Hence, the question: just how easy or difficult is it to open and close that rear lift gate from your actual experience?

As I said, she’s 77 and this will probably be the last car she will buy considering we drive them 10 – 15 years so she should buy something that she likes.

Any and all opinions welcome. My first post by the way.

Thank you.

The lift gate will not be an issue for her.... just push of a button to open and close. However, all the new technology through me and my wife for a loop. I turned some off fur to the fact it wants to steer itself. We are getting used to it now.

Relayman 1: Thank you for your Reply.
". . . . just push a button to open and close." Is that in manual mode or power mode? I'm guessing powered. Can you operate it manually? If you can, not much sense to do it that way I guess.

I agree about all the extra "stuff" that comes with new cars. I drive a 14 year old Tacoma with manual transmission and 2 wheel drive. And like it!

Agreed, new technology will take some getting used to.

I never had a power lift get until now, and love it!!! Get it!!! It's saves me a trip to the car after getting the groceries in, when the hands are full.

Most of the time, I just use the remote to open/close.

Alternatively to open, there is a button right under the toyota logo to open. To close, the button is on the bottom of the lift gate. It would have been better if they put this button on the side of the trunk, but it's okay since the lift gate is adjustable in height. And of course, there is another button for in the car for the driver to activate (door must be unlocked first).

I do not believe fully manual is an option. Per owners guide as an option: "Lower the back door using the back door handle. The back door closing assist will be activated, and the power back door will fully close automatically."

Oh, as you are shopping with options, also cross shop one trim level up. I originally wanted the XLE+Premium, but happily ended up with a Limited.

Sam,

Sincere thanks for your on hands comments on the lift gate. Very helpful. You make it sound like it might be a nice feature. Especially after lugging in the groceries and closing the door remotely. My wife would really like that.

We're not looking to get anything fancier than the XLE. The larger wheels on the higher end models I don't think would accommodate our fairly new high end snow tires and wheels from our '07 RAV4 we need for our 700 foot long driveway where we live on the south shore of Lake Ontario.

So that XLE Convenience Pkg might be OK.

Jon,

I suspect my wife would/will like it too if we end up with one. Yeah, it's got to be handy.

But we're still looking.

Thanks for your Reply and have a nice and safe day. Your wife and one year old too.

Power Lift gate was a must for us. My wife is much younger than your mother but it always bothered me to see her pulling from above to on a lift gate. One pulled shoulder muscle and you will wish you had the power one :)

The rest of the stuff I could also live without as well, but not much you can do.

To open or close the gate, there is a button on the fob, a button on the dash, and a button on the gate - inside and outside the gate - so you can use one for up or down. If you pull manually on the gate I can't remember - but I think it beeps at you to remind you to press one of the buttons instead.

Jolly,

Best of luck with your decision. We have a 2019 xle hybrid and couldn't be happier. Canadian specs are a bit different from the US but it has so far been really great.

It sounds like the power lift gate can be pretty handy. Not so the moon roof I guess.

I'm sure my wife would really like it.

Thanks so much for your Reply L RAV. Be safe.

I have the manual and would definitely recommend the power lift gate. It's easy to open but a pain to close, especially if she's not tall.
Sounds like sage/good advice Jwhite.

I guess for the extra cost, around $1240 +/- amortized over many years, it's worth the cost.

My wife is medium height so the manual one could be an issue.

Thanks for your Reply and have a good day. A safe one too.

The power liftgate has 5 height settings, so it should be no problem closing for a shorter driver on one of the lower settings. The biggest issue is it's slow, a manual liftgate is much faster to use. It's also expensive to repair based on reports from 4th gen owners that have had them fail, it's not just a couple $30 struts, unfortunately.

My '19 XLE has the moonroof, but not the power lift gate. It's not too terrible to open, press/hold the little rubber button above the licence plate and gently pull out, the door swings up moderately slow on its own. Closing it isn't too bad either, it has little pull handles to grab onto and pull down. I do have to slam mine somewhat once its about to close or else the damn thing sometimes fails to latch fully and the car makes a fuss when I try to lock it.

Someone older/short might enjoy the power lift gate to make life more..........convenient? 😁

None of my previous cars had one so it doesn't bug me.

We have never had the pleasure of a power lift gate. I'm sure they are very handy most of the time and hope they never fail.
And WillRav4 Tacos, sounds like you are very satisfied with your manual lift gate.

When things get back to normal, we would like to visit a Toyota dealer to look over the various features on the new RAV4's, especially, the power lift gate.

Hope to do that in the next couple weeks.

Thank you both for your comments.
