This morning I was driving to work and the car started talking to me telling me that I had an incoming message from so-in-so. My phone was in my pocket but connected via Bluetooth to the car. Is there a way to view this message on the car display or is it just a notification and I still need to pull the phone out of my pocket? I know I can view messages like this if I am connected via CarPlay.

Press the voice button on the steering wheel and ask the Toyota voice assistant to read your latest text message. You can also navigate via the Phone menu but not while at speed.

To build on this: I have an iPhone, and I've noticed the following:

  1. You can't say "read my text messages". You have to say "what are my messages" or "read my messages". Specifying "text" doesn't work.
  2. Related to above, if you go to the phone menu and select "SMS", nothing shows up. For some reason the iPhone Messages app must not link with the RAV as SMS or texts.
  3. If you immediately press the voice button while the notice is active that you have received a new message, the only relevant thing you can say is "read it to me". For some reason the "read my messages" prompt does not work from that screen.
Furthermore, I think that Toyota is updating the Entune software, because the results I get seem to be changing. For example, a few weeks ago I couldn't reply to messages because Entune couldn't determine who they came from, so telling Entune to reply would result in "No sender", but then last week it seemed to be announcing the sender prior to reading the message content, so maybe they've fixed that?

My previous Blackberry ANDROID 8.1 phone worked perfectly in my 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited. I upgraded to a Samsung S20+ (Android 10) and while the phone pairs, the RAV will no longer read Text Messages. I tell it to "Read Text Messages" and a list if recent messages populates the screen. I choose a message, "1" … then the RAV tries to load the message … spinner keeps spinning …. trying to load/read the message. I have to press the HOME button to exit. If I use the touchscreen to navigate to Messages, I can select that same message, and it gets read back to me. Has anyone been successful with the newer Android phones ?

I have gotten Text while driving. I have a Samsung Note 9, so android. While driving
I can select the Phone button,
then messages, and see all my messages listed.
Select the most recent one, and it will automatically start reading it.

I don't use the Voice system, because I haven't been able to get use to the prompt phrases.

I have a Samsung S9+ and a 2019 Rav4 Hybrid. Text messages used to read to me, but now I experience the same issue you are having. Or I get "there are no SMS messages" or it reads the text, but they all just say "period".
Been to Toyota and they updated the system, but no luck. A friend connected a new Google Pixel phone and it works perfectly. I'm wondering if a different Text app on the phone would fix the issue. I haven't had time to try.

Get this .... a friend came over with the SAME model of Samsung S20+ that I have .... His works flawlessly. After testing his device and repairing mine, suddenly mine worked fine also! Then after a restart of the vehicle, mine failed and went back to "period" again. Reconnect his device... all good. Reconnect mine, could NOT get it working again. "PERIOD".

I considered a Factory Reset of the phone, but I recall the "period" issue started when I got the new phone, when it was factory fresh. Previously I had a Blackberry with no issues.

Please share if you make any progress. I've tried enabling the phone's Developer Options to configure Bluetooth settings, but no joy.
