-- The Rav4.1 has a manifold absolute pressure sensor. It does not have a mass air flow sensor. The MAP sensor is mounted on the passenger side of the engine bay, at the rear, on the firewall, not far from the battery's positive terminal. For more info, see www.rav4world.com/threads/sensors-their-descriptions-and-symptoms.291247/

-- What is your Rav's battery voltage with the engine off? A symptom of a dying battery (or possibly an alternator needing new brushes to keep the battery properly charged) is low voltage with the engine off. A battery not being charged enough will cause starting hesitation.

-- Consider a tune-up: When was the last time the spark plug wires, plugs, distributor cap and rotor were changed?

-- Does your CEL lamp light when you turn the key to the On position (engine off)?

-- I would check for codes and report back here.

-- If there are no codes, I would start by cleaning the throttle body et cetera as described here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3yb5RIlqPM

Thanks for the info. The battery is at 12.2v. The cel is off when the key is on. Do not know how long ago was the last tune up. so as the distributor wires and the cap rotor changed. I am unable to report code becasue I do not have the car computer(do I really need one?) . So I did the cleaning of the throttle body and changed the air filter. Meanwhile, the battery is charged to 12.7. The engine started and the RPM at 1400 with no hestation, put into gear(auto transmission), the RPM dropped to 1000.

-- Does the charge warning light on the instrument cluster come on during the lamp check, and then goes off when the engine is running? If so, the alternator is probably fine, and you may want to consider a new battery.

-- In my experience, a battery showing a mere 12.2 volts with the engine off would absolutely cause starting hesitation on the Rav4.1
