Hello all where we getting shift cables from first generation manual transmission. Local parts store says dealer part only local dealership wants 350usd for the pair. Ebay has a set with correct toyota part numbers for 50 bones worth a try or???

If 1 3 and 5 are loose in any way then that shift cable may be stretched or broken. Inside the cable is a twist of many strands and begin to break over time. Caconym, I would suggest getting a new cable for both as it's always good to replace in pairs. It sounds like yours are on their way out. Can be a bit of a pain to replace but well worth doing. Imagine driving and suddenly losing over half your gears because a cable snapped internally. It's all fun and games until reverse is no longer an option.

Bah, reverse is on the bottom with gears 2 and 4. I'm pretty sure I can get by with just those three in a pinch.
But if you really think it's important to be able to use absolutely every gear, I guess I'll see if I can find new cables from somewhere.
I should be able to just splice in some 2mm wire cable from a pushbike gear selector, right?

Actually I have heard of people getting custom made wires from some bike ships. Its the same cable really, material wise.

But yeah, I know reverse is on the second cable. I was just joking. Imagine pulling out of a spot and the cable snaps. You'd have to push your car backwards by opening the door and using your foot lol. A sight to see for sure!

And yeah, I had a trans blow on me where I lost 1st and 5th. It was interesting starting in 2nd all the time. There's one hill that has a stop right before it and it's super steep. Had to redline just to get started on it haha.

I got some very nice ones recently off of Amazon! They work great and they were both shipped for around $70 total

They appear to be “currently unavailable” but don’t discount Amazon - the quality seems to be the same/similar to OEM

If you have to occasionally jimmy it into gear then it’ll probably go out completely soon

The cables from some corolla's fit, I've got corolla cables in mine.. I don't know exactly from what year but if you take your cables out then you can probably get them matched up at the local junkyard... If you go for used cables then I'd recommend ordering new bushings.

But if the cables aren't broken in two, then you might just have bad bushings, so perhaps check that first.

Unfortunately the mass majority of the time these cables break internally. So you wouldn't have two pieces per say.

Best way to tell is have someone shift through the gears while you observe the shift fork. If it doesn't fully move, its most likely the cable. If it's loose without shifting its the bushing.

I believe its stretched and the bushings are toast for sure

How did you get to the top bolt in the grommet where they go through the firewall?
