So am I understanding it correctly that the A/C button should be left on all the time, so that the auto climate can activate it as necessary? Like having it turned off means the auto climate control cannot use air conditioning as part of how it manages itself?

Or do I need to manually keep turning that on whenever I need defog/cooling?

You have it right. BTW, any time you engage the defroster/defogger, it turns on the A/C. Most of the time the A/C compressor is a very small power load and you shouldn't give it another thought. Leave it in auto mode and just use the temperature setting to increase or decrease the cooling load.

The Auto mode does exactly how you described. There is one other option when you have Auto enabled and that is you can press the A/C button and the Auto system will maintain temperature using the fans speed and heater if needed without using the A/C compressor. Keep in mind though, that the A/C systems are unlike the old systems where they cause a load on the engine or in the hybrid system, the electrical system. The pressures that the pump sees varies dependent upon the ambient temperature. Basically, when it cool out side, the pressure the pump is creating is very low and when it's hot out, then the pressure of the coolant increases. So, bottom line, just press the Auto button and don't be too concerned about MPG. If you don't use the compressor much, the seals inside and deteriorate and then you're replacing the pump due to lack of use.

I keep mine turned off unless I specifically want a/c. I believe it will keep the run hours on the compressor to a minimum and lengthen the life.
I've had A/C on for 13 years on my gen 3 and I haven't had any compressor issues so far. I cross my fingers. 😂 Keep in mind that the A/C compressor also helps regulate moisture in the cabin air, which prevents health issues, fogging, and a bunch of other problems.

If it's cool out, an A/C in an auto climate control car will likely use in the realm of 50-300 watts of power (depends how cool it is outside/what the humidity is). It's insignificant, but also more measurable than not. It probably has the same draw as your head/taillights. If you live in a dry climate(like me), there's zero reason to keep it on when it's cool out, but leaving it on all the time won't really impact much either. Compressor parts are going to wear more when they are under high load (cooling you down quickly on a hot summer day).

There is an option in the menu settings where you can have the AC not turn on in the Auto mode

Understood, but I would rather be able to just press the Auto button and have the A/C turn on and have the option to manually turn off the A/C via its button.

In my 2 previous Prius. I set the Temp at 20c and just left it year round. Left the A/C on all the time. Occasionally i had to switch it up for defog, but typically i always left it on Auto set at 20c. I only ever changed the Temp in the winter time if it got real cold out. Otherwise i just left it at 20c on Auto. I'm assuming the Rav4 is very similar to the Prius when it comes down to hvac. Powered by the traction battery.
