I drive a lot in the backcountry where there’s no cell coverage. When I use google maps through apple car play the map disappears when going deep in to no cell areas.

any suggestions on a solution? I could download maps to the phone but Apple Maps or google maps doesn’t have options to download maps for offline usage.

thanks

I keep the maps of WI, MN, and MI on my phone. I do a lot of driving in areas without cell reception. Google Maps works excellent. No loss of navigation. You don’t get traffic updates. But you most likely will not them in those areas.

Google offline maps are invaluable in the mountains. I use them all the time. FYI you only need GPS reception to your phone (I.e., have the sky above you and not be underground) to use navigation in offline maps. No cell reception required, unless you want real time traffic updates.

Does the onboard Nav function, if so equipped, work w/o cell coverage?
The onboard Nav does not rely on cell coverage for its basic functions. It only uses cell connections for updates, real time traffic, and route optimization. The real time route guidance, search functions, etc. work fine without any cell coverage.

Remember, cell phones were invented by old guys WITHOUT cell phones.

Computers were invented by people without computers.

What you may consider a life or death necessity is totally superfluous.

Did you write this on a cell phone or computer?

Guess we should just go old school:

There are two typewriters in the house. One electric, one mechanical.

In the seat pocket of my car . . . states maps and a US Atlas. In the storage compartment behind the seat of my Polaris Slingshot . . . state maps and a US Atlas. Only a fool puts their 100% trust in a cell phone or a GPS. The sun is going into an active phase. Satellites, cell phones and GPS will be affected. Don't go any further from your house than you can walk back.

If all else fails, the sun, moon and stars will get me home.

Totally agree. Keep prepping.
