I've got a new Rav4 PrimeSE. I'm planning on getting snowtires on an additional set of wheels. I'm a little confused regarding the correct TPMS sensors. I'm not interested in buying Toyota parts at $80-$100 each. Not so sure my dealer will even get the right ones. Has anyone bought and used other sensors that give a pressure display on their MID. What MHz are correct? Some suggestion please.

They're 315Mhz, but I don't worry about such things anymore. For my last several cars, I just get universal Autel sensors that can do both frequencies. Then I clone them with the original sensor IDs and call it a day.

I think I read somewhere on this forum that all Rav4s have capability to store two sets of TPMS sensors... If that's the case, why the need to clone the second set?

Not only that, but RVs can now automatically learn new sensor IDs, so cloning is not really necessary. But I already have the tool, and it takes under a minute to clone them, so why not?

Could you tell me more about auto learning new sensors? I was going to order winter tires mounted from Tirerack with their TPMS sensors, but they seem to think the Auteltool is needed
Checkout my post here with instructions from the owner's manual on how to register new sensor IDs.

I understand these are "cloneable" but is it safe to assume they come with existing IDs so they can be registered via the car if you do not have a device to clone them?
The last Autel sensors I bought did not have any IDs on them. You need a tool to assign randomly generated IDs or clone them to existing IDs. But if you buy cloneable IDs from Tire Rack, I would think they can put IDs on them before shipping.

Thanks. I forwarded that page to the Tirerack tech folks who said that with their $40@ TPMS sensors installed I would still need a tool to reset the system…don’t know what to think

Not sure what else to tell you. If they install compatible sensors that have IDs, you shouldn't need a tool. Will they let you return the tool if you don't need it?

Thanks for your insights.Trying to get confirmation of ID, may gamble and just get them, and will share my experience if I do
Unless you get OEM sensors, they will require two things:
1. Programming for your specific make-model-year, which will also give each sensor a unique ID (this is where you can reuse/clone your original sensor's ID). Either the shop should do this programming or you need a specific tool to do it.
2. Having your car learn the new sensor IDs (assuming prior programming was well done). As per generaltso, the Prime seems to be able to learn them itself. The regular hybrid is not, and requires the likes of Techstream.

Thanks for the clarification

Is anything else programmable in the clone-able sensors besides the ID? I've read that there are multiple communication protocols in use and I wonder if the universal/clone-able sensors can be programmed to mimic different sensor types that may communicate differently. Or do all sensors operate in the same way and only differ by ID (and frequency) ? That doesn't seem likely but I don't know for sure.

Rav4 Prime showed me some new tricks;

Popping this old message to new....

My 2022 Prime SE has the new style of TPMS sensors,
They are rubber vs my 2019 metal sensors.
They are two piece vs one piece metal...

Heard that from the "car care nut guy"

Anyone know the part numbers or Amazon links for the new sensors...

I "heard" they dont need Techstream programming, just install and drive....
Not sure though...

Thanks
