I am taking it upon myself to change my rear brake pads. My car is at 80k miles. My question is, when do I know to change my rotors? And when I change my pads, do the rotors have to be resurfaced??? The service writer at Toyota mentioned them being resurfaced when they gave a price for changing the pads, but never specified whether or not they NEEDED to be done.

The other side looked good as well. I can see an outline of where the break pad pressed against the rotor. That should be fine right? It didn't make an impression in the rotor.

Being the rear brake, this is a drum in hat type of parking/e-brake. There’s a tiny cable drum brake inside the rotor. The screwdriver slot is a rubber plug to access the adjustment wheel for the shoes.

I bought this gauge so I can measure the thickness of all my rotors. Works well. Bought it off EBay.
