Today, April 22, 2022, I purchased a 2022 RAV4 Hybrid Limited. In the back, there was an unopened bag with "Toyota Cargo Net", PNI # 500885180000 on the cardboard top, and a label on the plastic bag portion that says "Description: Toyota RAV 4 Hideaway Net - DIO" and "Part No.: PT347-42190".

The bag unzips easily. That's where installation stops and the head scratching begins.

I want to mount the net so that the bottom is stretched between the two D-rings near where I'll be loading cargo and the top (open side) attaches to ..... nowhere because there is no place to attach the top of the net so that I can put groceries or whatever in VERTICALLY. Even worse, the closed end of the net won't stretch far enough to reach both D-rings.

The only way to "install" (and I use that term loosely) the net is:
  1. attach the narrow/bottom side of the net to the D-rings near the rear seats because those 2 rings are closer to each other.
  2. attach the top/open side of the net FLAT on its side using the the two wider-spaced D-rings near the entrance to the cargo area.
Such a configuration is totally useless! Whoever designed PT347-42190 sure as hell never put groceries in it the way a normal human being would (vertically).

The issue seems to be there are no D-ring attach points for the top of the net. I just purchased the vehicle, so I'm hoping I won't have to go out and buy some after-market attach point and figure out how to mount it myself to achieve the normal way (I'm pretty sure I speak for most people here) people would expect a cargo net to function.

I've reached out to the dealer to see if they have any ideas. YouTube has some wild, scary looking "solutions" that I'm not ready to use because none of them address both the problem of the bottom hooks not being able to stretch the full width of the cargo area and no attach points high up in the cargo area to attach the top/open end of the net too.

Okay, DIO means Dealer Installed Option, so it didn't come from the factory. Here's how Toyota shows it installed:

Not exactly what you had in mind, is it? Here's an information page on the cargo net:

That's certainly the only way I can imagine it being "installed", but, as you correctly point out, it's nowhere near what I need and certainly does not match the picture on the cardboard top (the piece with the two staples that attaches to the plastic bag) of this Genuine Toyota "cargo net".

At least they didn't charge me for it. Maybe they were just trying to get rid of it? I'll see if there is something better that I can use that won't require me to drill any holes and risk voiding the warranty.

None of the Toyota OEM cargo nets install vertically. Many people are getting this instead:

From the reviews of that product, it seems the cheaply made, non-replaceable T-hooks used to hold the top of the net in place tend to pop out after only a few uses and after installation, interfere with the retractable security cover. I cannot afford to have the hooks pop out when I'm carrying groceries. If the hooks were more reliable and replaceable, I might have considered this suggested alternative, but I think I'll avoid replacing one bad solution with another.

Examples:
Problem comes when there’s any amount of tension placed on the net, the plugs that hold the net in pop out.
I like the net idea but it pulls out at the top on both sides easily. Also the cover on the cargo area can’t be used when the net is being used.
Hooks keep falling out of holes with just a little pressure. We only keep 1-2 soccer balls in the net and everytime we open it, one or both of the hooks attached to the car fly out. Not the best purchase if you’re looking for a cargo net for your rav4.

Two options: One a DIY, and another $30 Amazon option. Doing both will give you 2 vertical nets in addition to the horizontal spider net

The Amazon products are "good net, bad clips" as mentioned in this review from April 15, 2022:
Plastic clips break easily, making the nice net you're buying useless after the clips break.
Even worse, once the clips break, and they will break, you cannot get replacements, as mentioned in this initially positive review that was significantly downgraded once the reality of the cheaply made, highly breakable clips was encountered as part of this February 2022 review:
So after a month of net ownership, having the same problem as some others having, the dreaded clips. In theory and practice, they are a great idea but they are just not the sturdiest. They tend to be a little delicate. I already broke one and am using the spare that was sent along with the original packaging but obtaining more of these clips seems to be impossible. In short, great net, ok hooks but horrible customer service!
So, again, I am reluctant to use an Amazon product that is known to have cheaply made, highly breakable hooks that you have zero chance of getting replacement clips for.

Been using mine for months now, and they're very sturdy. I have dismantled that part of the car several times as I am installing sound deadening and thermal insulation, as well as other wiring stuff, air compressor lines, etc, etc... I have probably installed and removed them 4 or 5 times already. I have had no problems with these clips.

the option I did with the self made straps WILL NOT break. The screw-bolts are steal and the webbing is climbing webbing (good to several thousand pounds). I would love to see you put several thousand pounds of groceries in your cargo net!!!

A similar product is available on Amazon for US$15.36 with a free return within 30 days policy. I'll check around for a local source, but if I cannot find one locally, I'll consider something like these trunk organizers, especially ones that come with hooks I can use to secure it to the D-rings near the lift gate (where I'll be placing groceries) instead of the D-rings near the rear seats (too far away).

LINK? $15 would be a FIND and a half! Honda charged close to $100 for a similar net (it actually worked INFINITELY better than Toyota's "spider net" and why they took those hooks out of the rav4 stock, to begin with is bewildering to me as well! C'mon Toyota, you're willing to develop a great AWD system but you can't hand over a $50 net as part of a standard feature to come with a car?) I didn't spend money on that spider net because I knew I wanted an envelope net, so I was fine spending $30 after just saving whatever that spider net cost... Heck I had just spent 38K, so what's an extra $30? ... anyway...If you have a link for this $15 net with hook attachments, I would LOVE to find out about it.

Quick update (last post was in the middle of the night, so I forgot a few details.) The net I obtained came with replacement hooks as well, in case they break. I have had it for 6 months, (99% sure it had a 30 day return policy too, but it's been a hot-minute) I have had zero problems and the net works flawlessly. Best envelope style net I have ever had, every bit as good as Honda's spendy net! (I actually like it better than the ones that came with my friends' Grand Cherokees (Jeeps are SO over-rated anyway- EVERY ONE of them had MAJOR MAJOR mechanical issues around 60K miles. F- Jeeps) I hope you find a product that makes you happy! Cheers mates!

Some people find the following to be too small, but it does have the dimensions. Each person will have to decide if the small size and lack of straps to secure it to the RAV4's D-rings is a deal-breaker:

My bad, I thought they were talking about a $15 net... NM. As far as those tote organizers, I picked a smaller one up at the grocery store for $4 (or was it $3?) IDK, does the exact same job, and doesn't slide around on my rubber mats. Like I said, my bad, I misunderstood and thought we were still talking about nets. DOH!

I have the all-weather mats in my RAV4, so I'm looking around for something that won't slide around in the back while holding groceries. One idea is to buy two small ones that would fit on either side, secured between the two D-rings (front and rear). Alternatively, I would get a longer one and secure it to the two D-rings close to the liftgate (left, right).

Um...yeah. I'm not a Hymalian trekker nor an Amazon woman who plans to strap down anything flat against...well....
anything! Super stupid design. I wracked my brains for days...wish they hadn't put in my car. TRASH. On the other hand it's a safe space to transport my "Go Brandon!" signs without having my windows bashed in.

Thanks for this. I just received my Prime (I know this is the non-prime forum but this appears to be the same thing I ran into) and for the life of me I couldn't determine how this thing was going to install vertically like is shown in picture on the packaging for the net (shows a picture of a couple of coolers, a soccer ball and some ruffles chips all upright in the net).

FYI

Dug up this old thread, looking for the right hook to purchase to use a vertical net from my previous car.

Watched one of the install videos, and looks like the existing plastic bolt already works perfectly to secure the net. So no need to use the cheap plastic hooks. Might have to buy a new net anyway, cause this one seems too small coming from a Bolt.
