I bought a new LE last week and after driving it during the day for the first time I noticed I was getting kind of dizzy, then realized the windshield has a wave or something right in my sight line - things get bigger, then smaller if you move your eyes past it. Feels dangerous - I'm taking it to the dealer on Tuesday for them to look at it - my fear is that this is a common thing with this car - have any of you experienced it?

My windshield is fine, but it's hit or miss. Lots of windshield distortion issues with newer cars today due to the fact that there's so much variability in windshield suppliers now. Only 15 years ago, most OEM windshield glass was made in North America by companies like PPG (Pittsburgh Paint and Glass) but they couldn't compete in cost by the flood of cheap glass coming overseas. PPG is now owned by a Mexican company after selling itself a few times to starve off bankruptcy. Now a lot of North American built vehicles use glass from Chinese companies like Fuyao or XYG. Even Safelite stopped making their own glass and buys from XYG now. Not surprising given the cost: Car Glass Windshield Xyg From China Manufacturer Auto Windshield For Car - Buy Car Glass Windshield Xyg,Xyg Auto Glass,Car Glass Product on Alibaba.com.

The Japanese built Ravs still use Asahi glass which is still made in Japan.

So basically, yes, it's a common issue today. Best bet is to try and get a Japanese windshield from the dealer under warranty. Can't hurt to try right? Otherwise you may be going back and forth to the dealer, it's already happened with Tesla owners and owners of the new Corvette who had windshields replaced under warranty for distortion only to find the new windshield worse than the original.

Yeah, I mean this point the car is not drivable for me - when the sun goes down it's a little easier to tolerate for whatever reason. I'm worried a dealer "isn't going to see it" - at that point not sure what I'd do.

They'll replace it since it's a safety issue and it's a pretty common issue today with any windshield with an semi-extreme slope which the Rav4 has. I doubt they will give it much scrutiny. Chances are you aren't the first person with this issue that has brought it up to your dealer.

Is your issue as bad as post #52 below? This guy was able to record the distortion on his Corvette.

Not that bad, but everything the other people say in that thread is spot on with whats going on with mine. Can't focus on anything through the windshield, hopefully this car is easier to fix than the one they're discussing on that thread.

as suspected, they "didn't see it" - and opened a case, but were sure that I knew they were unlikely to change it because they couldn't see what I was talking about - I explained that it's worse at certain times of the day - I made the appointment at a time when it was better so that I could, you know, drive it there. They basically told me I'm pretty much stuck with it.

That's awful. This windshield issue is really giving me hesitation to pursue this car.

Make sure you point out that it’s a safety issue. Say that it’s making you disoriented and dizzy while driving and have them document that. Once it’s a liability issue, the manufacturer will usually react.

I lowered my seat as low as it can go and it's slightly better - right now I'm looking into possibly trading it in for something else at another dealership? I don't even know if that will work since I just got that car monday - the new dealership would basically be selling a brand new car with 80 miles on it. What a nightmare.

Could try a different dealership too with the windshield complaint. Part of me is also curious to know the windshield info in the bottom corner, not sure why, guess I wonder if maybe yours was made by a different company than mine.

From my Canadian build '21 rav4 le, built in december
Toyota
AGC Automotive
DOT-376 M8H41 AS1
30E
LAMISAFE

Same information on my windshield, also from Canada and AGC, LAMISAFE. I suppose I could try a different dealer, I've got 0 faith in them at this point. Of course they all act like they've never heard of a such a thing. I find it hard to believe that the best selling car in its class is "just like this" - the road signs literally look like they're wobbling during the day.

Do you guys think going to a different dealer would help? Even if they "escalated" the case to Toyota. I still haven't heard back about it, by the way. I really love the car - just can't drive it as is. I went out today and closed one eye focused on a stop sign and moved my head as if I were shaking it "no" - you can clearly see a vertical line of distortion.

You should call Toyota customer directly. Dealers NEVER stick there neck out for a customer. Toyota most likely will since a liability on there part if you get in an accident.

You might also take it to a glass place like safelite and see if they will document it as distorted for you - makes your case more believable.

If the dealership does not address your
concern to your satisfaction, call the
Toyota Customer Experience Center
at (800) 331-4331.

Good luck - be sure to report back.

Thanks for this information, the dealership did give me a slip that has a record of me saying there's a ripple / wave in the windshield, but they conveniently left out the part about it making me dizzy and the fact that I mentioned it was stressful just driving it back to the dealership. I'll be sure to mention that on the phone after they side with the service guy and deny a replacement. You pay this much for a car and the very least you expect is to be able to drive it without being disoriented.

Called that toyota number and explained the situation, they had no record of anything being submitted about it - even though the dealership said they did on Tuesday. Not sure if they're just different departments or what... the saga continues.
