I have a '22 HYBRID XLE PREMIUM with 7" screen (not 8" or 9" JBL Audio Plus).
Planning to change 4 speakers (2 dash corners & 2 front doors) without add a subwoofer, the amplifier or replace the head unit.
Will it make the sound noticeable better?

Please share your experience and speaker brand you recommended.

Thank you.

I replaced all my speakers with a set from OEM Audio+ :Toyota RAV4 | Speaker Upgrades - OEM Audio Plus

Sounds much better: highs are crisper and bass is a bit better. Also a bit louder since they are more efficient (sound output verses power input). The big plus is they are plug and play, no wire cutting, wire tapping, or adapters needed. The only "challenge" is you have to drill out the factory pop rivets in the doors; new pop rivets are included with the kit, but you need a pop rivet tool to install them.

Currently have Kicker DS series in my dash after swapping out the KS series. I had the JBLs before that and I found them to be too harsh which is usually the case with JBL in my opinion. I have a set of Hertz components just waiting to get installed, just haven't gotten around to it.

The Kicker KS series are now in my fiancée's 17' rav since she has an aftermarket radio and they sound much better than they did in my 22' rav. Unfortunately our limiter is the factory radio; you really can't push much with it. My advise would be to go with the Kicker DS series.

Edit: I do have a JBL BassPro Hub (Spare tire) subwoofer installed as well (No amp currently)

Put JBL's in the dash and front doors, Infinity's in the rear doors. Since it was apart I also installed Hushmat on all inner door surfaces I could. Huge difference in sound, made the car a little quieter, and the doors don't sound like a tin can when you close them. Hushmat a little more expensive but easier to work with than Kilmat. JBL dash speakers are a little harsh but some can be adjusted out. Definitely need caps on the dash speakers. As a side benefit I was able to remove the squeege tool the window tint guy left in my passenger side front door that rattled every time I closed it.

I replaced the front speakers first. Made a huge difference in sound. I used the infinity speakers from Crutchfield. The front dash speakers were the Infinity Ref-3032cfx. Wife was happy with just the front speakers being replaced. I replaced the front door speakers with the Infinity REF-6532ex and added sound deadening. Sounded great. Not the high end speakers as far as cost, but good sound for what we listen to in the Rav4.
If you do change your speakers, make sure the polarity is correct on hooking them up. several threads on this issue. Was a great help.

Just installed these Kickers & it does make a difference. I always go to Crutchfield for my audio stuff as they always included everything needed for the specific vehicle, including wiring harnesses. Kicker 47KSC3504
With the wiring harness supplied from Crutchfield, did you have to cut the harness to switch the polarity or does the harness take polarity into account?

I cut mine because the supplied harness polarity was reversed. Same with the door speaker harness. I checked mine with a multimeter to confirm. That was a year or more ago, I doubt they have changed the harness. Confirm with Crutchfield or check with a multimeter.

I did not have to cut the harness. Is plug & play. The Crutchfield wiring that connects to the kicker speakers can only be plugged in one way. The one spade connector is one size(small) & the other is bigger. Also the Crutchfield harness is already wired for the crossover. Again, plug one end to the factory harness & the other to the new speakers. Done....

You may want to check the polarity of your speaker wiring. There are two different harnesses ( Red Wolf and Metra ) and both known to be wired in reverse for speaker polarity. While they are plug and play without doing anything the speakers will be out of phase resulting in the loss of bass. To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference when I changed the dash speakers because the crossover eliminates much of the dash speaker bass response. But I also changed all 4 door speakers and wanted to have everything in phase because there is already a lack of bass without a subwoofer. I tested both dash and door speaker harnesses with a multimeter and both are wired backwards. My install was over a year ago but I doubt they changed the harness since then. I think the Red Wolf harness came with a warning the polarity was reversed. Crutchfield supplied me with the Metra harness and there was no warning.

My understanding of the reverse polarity is the harness was developed for a different Toyota, I think the ForerRunner. The physical plugs are the same as the Rav4 and probably other Toy models but the wiring in the other car or cars reversed.

I just put the Kicker KSC models in my dash and front doors this week (will do the rears next week).

Keep in mind, I have the 11 speaker JBL system, but, making these speaker changes made a huge difference. Treble is much better and midrange is not as muddled as with the stock speakers. I have bad hearing in my left ear, so I generally have to turn up the treble, but with the new speakers, I turned it down a notch.

I just ordered a complete set of the Kicker KS series for the Dash and all four Doors. I saw a post above saying they swapped them out because of the factory radio not pushing enough. In my experience, that's not as bad as some might think. But I also do plan to eventually put a small amp in line, while adding a spare tire sub in the future too. I figured get the better series speakers now so I won't have to mess with that later.

As for the phase, this is the first I've seen of it. Exactly how do you check with a multimeter to check the phase of your speakers wires?

check this YouTube video out. If that one doesn’t do it for you there are others.
Wait... So you send a charge (Probably not healthy) to the speaker, how does this tell you how to test the car wiring? In other words this is just testing the polarity of the speaker, which sure it makes sense. But when you're dealing with the car wiring, this doesn't apply.

I believe this is what would help folks here more.

Are any of the Kicker components that fit Rav that are better than the JBL speakers that come with the premium audio packages?

Phasing is important when more than one speaker is in the system. A basic way to test for proper wiring when doing OEM swap is this:

(this only works on speakers big enough for you to see cone motion)
Note the OEM wiring. If the speaker has a "+" terminal then note that wire as "+". If no obvious markings then just pick a wire & terminal as the "+" and mark them.
Take out OEM speaker and use a AA or AAA battery to test cone motion, placing batt "+" onto to speaker "+" terminal, and then note the direction the cone moves.
Next is to ID the new speaker to match OEM. Do same procedure with the batt and note the cone direction of movement.
You should then wire the new speaker to match the cone movement of the OEM test, regardless if you swapped the wires to get that same direction of movement.
This ensures the phasing is the same as OEM setup.

It's possible for new speakers to be out-of-phase with other older speakers in the system, even though you connected + wire from old to the + terminal of new.

I didn't order components so I won't be able to speak on that. In my experience though I've always regarded Kicker as a decent brand and decent sound reproduction (to my ears). I can't speak for JBL from my own experience and most of the people I see installing speakers in the Rav using JBL are just wiring them to the factory radio and calling it a win. I might have gone with a cheaper (other than JBL) brand/line but I'm adding an amp so time will tell.

Pretty much any speaker upgrade is better than the JBL stock speakers that come with the premium audio package, components or not.

I couldn't find my picture of the JBL vs the ones I put in, but the magnet is small compared to the Kickers I put in.
