Our tank was 7/8 full and I wanted to top off for a long road trip and opened the fuel door and inserted the nozzle after the dash said ready to refuel and fuel just came back out.

After that experience the fuel lid would not open for several days.

Today I was told by Toyota the EVAP pressure valve was stuck closed.

It is under warranty with it being a 2021.

My advise don’t top off tank unless you are at least 3/4 full. 7/8 full May have been too close to full for the EVAP pressure valve to open when I depressed the button and pushing more fuel down the neck while closed may have caused the valve to stay stuck closed.

Not sure if this is the same on hybrids but it is good information:

Thank you I watched the video and I am sure most new autos operate under a similar setup so it does apply to my Prime.

I learned a lesson. . When the nozzle clicks I am going to remove it. I am also going to leave alone adding if the tank is 7/8 full.

I am not going to try and add until the tank is 1/2 full. I dodged a bullet under warranty.

Did it have an Error Message while the gas door refused to open?

Not immediately.

A couple days later a message appeared “check engine see dealer” However, the fuel door started working about the same time the message appeared.

I also burned off 1/4 a tank of fuel which may have had something to do with the fuel door suddenly functioning properly.

Who knows. Toyota just told me the pressure valve was closed and needed replaced. Fortunately, no fuel made it into the charcoal canister.

Bottomline I am not refueling until I am at 1/2 full going forward snd when it clicks I am done filling.

Picked up our Rav 4 and the warranty cost was $1,000 for the replacement of the EVAP Pressire switch. ($700 part + $300 labor)

They tested and the fuel was slowly going into the tank which meant the switch was not operating properly.

The fuel tank gauge was really messed up.
299 miles to empty with just under 3/4 full. I added 1.3 gallons and removed nozzle after it shut off

477 miles of range and needle past full. Go figure with just adding 1.3 gallons to the tank it went from 299 miles of range and just under 3/4 full to past full and 477 miles.

Hopefully that resets itself after a few fills...
