Are you talking about the buttons on the outside of the hatch? There is a big rectangle one that unlocks/opens the hatch, and a small round one that locks the doors. Was like this on my old Prius too.

This was useful on my Prius. I slam the hatch shut and hit lock.

On the Prime the motorized tail gate is way too slow. I usually hit close, walk up to the back door handle and hit lock and walk away.

I wish it had a close and lock button like some Volvos. On well.

Somewhat related question: Recently my back door button (as well as the back door button on the remote) will fail occasionally. The door will unlock and move about one inch but fail to open further. I have to use my muscles to push the door completely open. After I manually close the door, then immediately the button on the car and on the remote work properly. This has only happened in the last 1-2 weeks, but it has happened on two or three different days. On most days, there is no problem at all. Maybe it has something to do with the recent cold weather, but I live in California, and the overnight temperatures barely hit freezing, if at all.

Anyone else seen this problem?

That it starts to open then stops, I suspect that it is sensing unexpected resistance and stopping in case it is hitting something. There have been reports of the hinges breaking which changes the pivot point and increases the resistance. I would start looking there.

The button seems to be working fine. The problem seems to be that the door stops opening. It seems like there is moisture on the rubber seals that freezes and prevents the motor from opening the door. Try applying a lubricant like silicone to the rubber seal to help prevent water from staying on the seal.
