Hello
I have recently purchased a 23 Rav4 Hybrid XSE
and I did a tank full recently (one click) and noticed my gas gauge indicator was not showing tank full

Hence I filled in the gas slowly until I was able to see gas, checked again still shows about 3/4 full.

Is anyone facing this issue? Vehicle is less than a month old.

.
Note - I checked the forums and I saw there are many posts about not able fill all 14.5 G of gas, I don’t know if I have that issue - car has never been all empty to check that - always refilled after driving for 100-150 miles

Also, I thought that was an old issue and fixed already - not sure if this is related to that

Although I understand this was a test; I strongly suggest not filling to the where you can see the gas because it will damage the purge canister. 🙂
Yep. Drive it for 50 miles or more before going into he dealer to lower the fuel level in the tank itself. When they ask, tell them you did a second pump auto-shutoff once and that was it and it made no difference.

Something is wrong with the gauge; have the dealer fix it.

For some explanation,

I agree with JimL. This isn't one of those "only 10 or 11 gallons" afraid-to-fill-it posts we have hundreds of, it's definitely a warranty level issue.

Yep! I have atleast driven 20 and intend to drive 30 more miles… I didn’t know if it was a pump issue or car and kept on filling.

One top-off wouldn’t have long lasting damage right?

And just to repeat again ... the tank is 14.5 gallons by industry stadards posted elsewhere in countless threads but the usable is described by Toyota as about 9.3 between F and the low fuel warning. The rest are reserves and safety areas and that is how they are told to describe it.

Also to note - that this brand new vehicle has never had mpg average of more than 30 (hybrid should be 40 right? - I always drive in eco, no fast acceleration, etc)
Couple weeks ago - dealer said - all new rav4s are same and engine needs to break in. I should give it couple thousand miles.

does anyone think these both things are related?

I can only guess at this point that you canister has liquid fuel in it. Long term damage? No but it will take a while for the canister and system to work properly. It is meant for vapours not liquids. Time will tell.
This maybe on your dime. Sorry to say.

I have no idea what you mean. You simply let the pump go until it shut off a second time one time wondering what would happen, YES?

When I asked my salesman about possibly modifying something on a new car and wondering if it would affect the warranty, he gave me a good rule- If they can possibly blame it on something you did, THEY WILL.

Are you sure that is a 2023 Hybrid XSE? Because that is not a 2023 XSE dash. This is how the dash looks on the 2023s. I noticed you posted another thread regarding brake issues and now you're having fuel tank issues. Hopefully you didn't get swindled into buying a used 2022 with a rolled back odometer.

In your first post in this thread, the picture shows a tank average of 38.6 MPG. Is that not what you're getting? How are you calculating fuel economy?

Don't believe the dealer about break-in and mileage increasing substantially. That won't happen.

When you shut off your Rav, it should display a screen with information about your just-completed trip, showing the fuel economy you got on that trip along with the percentage of time when it was operating in EV-only mode. What does that say after a typical trip of yours?

I'm exploring purchasing a Rav4 and this post about the gas tank filling takes me back to a Chrysler vehicle I once had. All it took was one gas station attendant filling beyond that automatic gas pump shut off to destroy the fuel evaporation control system. By filling the charcoal canister with gas the engine did not run correctly and fuel mileage suffered along with dashboard lights and codes saying gas cap. Only after the evaporative control charcoal canister was changed out, would the engine run efficiently. Took years to get it finally fixed under a purchased in advance 5 year full maintenance warranty. Reckon it cost me an extra $1,000 in gas while I had the vehicle. That was when gas was way less than a dollar a gallon,
The only cure I know of is to remove the charcoal canister and replace it.
It is the one reason why I don't want to buy a used car.

Sometimes while filling up the gas tank pressure builds up and the the float gets stuck giving a false reading. It has happened to me before, remove the gas cap drive your car around the block see if this work. Another suggestion wait until the gas gauge is at 1/4 mark fill up it allows the float to reset on its own.

Do not overfill.

I’m pretty sure he is showing the MID from the 2023 hybrid XSE without the technology package. Unless they have changed build specifications during the year, only the Prime XSE and the Limited (gas and hybrid) come standard with the fully digital MID. It’s available as an option on the TRD gas and the hybrid XSE. Regardless whether the gauges are analog or digital, any vehicle should always show full when the gas pump stops at the click off.

Everyone should play with the dash displays via the steering wheel left round set of buttons to see what you model can tell you. Pick the one you like.

Also explore the settings menus and see how you can select default options for how various things work. The owner's manual has a whole section on customization.

I'll confess to driving more efficiently as ownership and learned experience helps me do better. On the way to and from a 50 mile away destination, just staying out of the PWR zone and at 3 miles under the posted speed limit mostly on cruise control I was at least 4 miles better than my early owner MPG and I had been driving a hybrid for several years before the Rav4 hybrid.

Agree with above. The 80 mph speed limits drink fuel while pushing all that air. Slow down to 75 and you are pushing significantly less air, better mileage. It's exponential since I think the force from air is either the square (X^2) or cube (X^3) of the air velocity on the car. I drive like a grandpa in this car and get like 44 mpg. I'm sure people behind me hate me. I use the ECO mode and it keeps me out of the power zone in cruise control. I used to go to the gas station once a week in my 08 RAV4 and now I can go just over two weeks. Combine that with points from grocery shopping giving me 20-30 cents off a gallon, loving it.

I bought a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid & found out after the fact, that there is an issue with an early stop on the gas pump. I have to manually fill up the last 3 to 4 gallons (pumping slowly). Pain in A$$, especially in winter. Sad to see that the issue hasn’t been resolved. But I don't remember the few times I didn’t manually finish that my gauge show only 3/4 full. I would take it in & have them take a look while your still under warranty.
