We bought a very nice used 2019 RAV4 hybrid in January and it's been great. Just this last week the rear lift gate door seal came loose and we found that because the door would not shut.

We were able to lego it and push it back into place but it seems the adhesive has worn out because every time we open the lift gate it pulls it apart. Gasket itself seems fine

What kind of adhesive did Toyota use originally and what kind of stuff should I use to keep it in place now?

Welcome to the forums!

Are you talking about the rubber weatherstripping on the body side of the car?

There is no adhesive that holds it, it is a sort of clamping that keeps it in place as well as routing under grooves in the body/plastic trim of the car. There is a black goop as well but that is a rust prevention that is applied at the factory.

A portion of the weather stripping is also routed below the tail light black plastic access cover.

If yours is coming off on its own it is possible it has been removed in the past and had the little "clampings" (not sure of the correct name) bent.

If it's been bent too much it may be hard to get it to ever keep its shape and remain in place, in which case it might be time to purchase a new one.

Do you know if it has been involved in a rear collision at some point in its past?

I know on my 2020 they replaced the headliner when doing my rail leak fix and they removed this weatherstripping and did a pretty good job putting it back on wrong, my door also didn't close right. I was able to fix it in my own though. They did get the black goop on the new headliner though. 😑

Thank you for the response! From the Carfax and dealer history report, I don't believe so.

I'm the best with nomenclature but I believe we are at least close to the same page.

When it has come loose from the groove the portion of the seal that was previously in the groove had some lightly sticky goo. I had thought it was adhesive but your statement of rust preventative may have changed my mind.

I'm just confused why now, maybe it was humid and the hatch door lifted it up it kind of pulled it and came free. I might try and find a real part and convince my self and it's fitment will be better.

Any other thoughts? I'll post back with what we end up doing

Thanks!

You can always add your own adhesion into the groove to help it stay on, if it fits well and you'd rather not buy new parts. If it's what I'm thinking of I'd cut a few small sections of the red, auto-rated 3M double sided black tape to put onto the tongue part. Then when you work the grooved gasket back on it'll hold together better.
