NX has a better setup? hmm.
The NX was the first vehicle to get this new SoC so it is featured in this article. There are 2 versions of the SoC that Toyota/Lexus uses, it is unclear which one is in the 8 inch/10.5 inch in our Ravs, but we have the same chipset. :)

Posted mainly for the nerds here who like reading things like this, you can drill down into the white papers for both chipsets to see the specific specs. (I'm a nerd). 😁

I'm a techie also. :)

Hi--2020 Rav4 XLE hybrid paired with an iPhone 13 pro max, iOS 16.3.1 (wired). GPS works fine, but every so often, out of nowhere, the Carplay freezes and disconnects. Screen is blank and unresponsive. The car radio works, but no display. Stopping, turning off the car and then restarting (in effect, "rebooting" the car) fixes everything. It happens every 3-4 months, and can't find a pattern. Has there been a software upgrade to fix this? Anyone else seeing a similar problem?
2023 rav4 XLE gas w/ iPhone 8 iOS 16.6, Yes just like you. GPS seems fine, but within the first month of ownership I noticed the blank screen where the google maps was. Carplay is not frozen, but google maps is a blank screen. I can't say what triggers it. Now I've encountered when I use google maps to navigate to a destination it works fine to start, then at some point during the trip will just stop navigating. Still shows the map - but the navigation to destination is done, just stops, with NO indication that has happened. I've almost missed my exit twice because of this, and in heavy traffic have to muck with the stupid display to get the nav going again. Gonna cause an accident! This happens after some amount of time, anywhere from 30 mins to 90 mins into the trip. I desperately want to fix this, even if I have to buy something, but don't know what specifically to do. My next experiment is to turn off the bluetooth on my phone and try a wired phone to car connection.

Also somewhat related, it's still not clear to me what I lose when my toyota care cellular subscription expires (one year I think)? I'm assuming Carplay navigation on the head unit still works.

I experienced this and similar on a recent trip to southern Utah. I believe it is caused due to Google Maps not being able to download complete map data in low cell phone signal areas. When your cell phone gets a better cell signal, Google maps usually corrects this, but not always.

Just so everyone knows, I haven’t seen it posted here. Over on Reddit, there are a couple of users who claim the problem is solved with the installation of a new GPS antenna. It’s not something Toyota wants to do because it is big $$$. So sounds like you’ll really need to fight for it… Might give it a try when I bring it for first oil change.

Is there a part number for the new antenna? Has a T-TT (tech tip) or T-SB (service bulletin) been issued? Any Toyota dealer will do nothing unless there is a T-TT or T-SB issued.

The GPS used by CarPlay is in the iPhone, same with Android, and not in the Toyota itself. Now the Toyota Map uses the antenna in the SUV itself And it might use GPS but also cell tower locations.
Much of the internet disagrees with this. Wireless CarPlay uses the cars GPS is what I am seeing, and references Apples development conference as evidence. Do you have real evidence to the contrary?

I have no real horse in this, I don’t even know if it’s true. But it’s a frustrating issue and think all who are having it should be aware of any solutions being offered.

It may be just one guy now that I read through it. He didn’t have a Tech tip, but did offer a part number but I can’t find it ATM (Reddit is a disaster to navigate). I’ll let you guys know if I find it…

Well I have found an article about the CarPlay problem. It isn’t the Toyota GPS antenna seems other makes and models are having the same issue.

On last week’s episode of 9to5Mac Happy Hour, I complained about an ongoing CarPlay problem I’ve been experiencing on and off for nearly a year. Essentially, the GPS continually bugs out and completely breaks navigation via Apple Maps, Google Maps, or any other navigation app.

Since last week’s Happy Hour episode was released (listen here), I’ve heard from a lot of CarPlay users who are facing similar problems with GPS performance.

He has some workarounds but not a real fix.

Thanks for that. I’m really hoping this is just a software issue on the phone side that will get cleared up with an iOS update.

I wish that someone would jus fix this problem since no one wants to take the responsibility- Toyota or Apple. Its ridiculous. I didn't pay this kind of money for a faulty GPS system that can put me in danger.

I am having this problem, sometimes every 5 minutes. Drives me crazy. The CarPlay blanks out, reconnects, freezes, crashes, reboots….

TrueTexan is right. Apple Car play navigation is all on the smart phone. Says so right on the screen: Google Maps

Yes, the end user app is from the phone, but carplay communication is a two way street. And the spec calls for wireless CarPlay to use the car’s GPS antenna (ostensibly because if you aren’t “wired”, you could have your phone in a purse or pocket where the GPS signal won’t be as good).

I was going to test the wireless vs wired theory out, but somehow the damn thing just worked fine yesterday. That’s what makes testing hard is the seemingly random occurrence of when it works vs when it doesn’t.

I have one other weirdness that I wonder if it’s related. I have a compass set on my dash display, and on occasion it will just disappear. This is not often, but often enough that along with the GPS often confused about heading makes me think.
