I believe in manual mode pulling liftgate closed puts tremendous stress on the hinges and they break. The liftgate is designed with the struts to handle the opening and closing of the lift gate, the opening is not a big deal that puts no stress on the hinges at all it's the closing that trashes the hinges if in manual mode, probably even in auto as the OEM struts can't handle the weight.
I'm stuck in that same rut. Toyota unwilling to do anything about it. Sitting in body shop a month now? Ideas?

My 2020 Rav4 is now having the liftgate problem. Toyota dealership is saying it is my fault, that I must have had something in there so it wouldn't close. That is a bunch of BS. I am also very disappointed in Toyota right now. I should have stuck with my Honda CRV. I tried calling them but of course they are closed. They need to take care of this problem. I even have the complete extended warranty but that doesn't cover it.

We have a 2019 RAV4 adventure, the power liftgate started closing a little on aligned, each time it would open and close it would get more and more and aligned, now it won’t close flash, you can hear air whistling when you drive, it doesn’t seal shut, and it won’t open more than 6 inches. Now we have to open and close it manually. We had someone look at it in the hinge is about to break off of the entire frame. Toyota thinks this is our fault and wants to charge us to fix it. I had the same issues. The manger of the body shop determined that the hinges placed for the hatch upon assembly at the factory were defected. Toyota Inc refused to claim responsibility. I now drive a Nissan and will never own a Toyota again as long as I live, nor will anyone that I know or will ever meet, if I can stop them. It is because Toyota did not stand up for their brand name that I feel this way, not the defect, the company stance!

Right, a company is either proud of the Brand or? Just lurking in the shadows to rip folks off!

I finally replaced the two liftgate hinges today, one very noticeably bent

in the picture. The other one hard to tell but it was bent also. Took me a whole 25 minutes to do both of them. Very simple job. Didn't have to realign anything. Everything just fell right into place. Cost me a whole $106 for 2 hinges from Toyota. One body shop was gonna charge $543 and a body shop specifically for Toyota vehicles which they recommended was going to charge me upwards of $6,000!

I bought my daughter a 2020 Rav 4 this past fall. The vehicle currently has 60K miles. After some cold temps and a snow this winter, the liftgate started malfunctioning. Not opening or closing like it was suppose to and beeping for extended periord of time while not working. I found this forum and numerous other compalints. This led me to inspect the hinges. Sure enough the hinges are split. I found that a class action lawsuit has been filed against Toyota in U.S. District Court in California, Hughes vs Toyota February 15, 2024. Spread the word. Lawyers can't ethically solicit complainants, but nothing says an owner with this problem can't make other owners aware, who if they want can contact the filing law firm. https://www.classaction.org/media/hughes-v-toyota-motor-sales-usa-inc-et-al.pdf

This has just happened to me and my 2020 Rav 4. unfortunately even though I only have 28k on car it is 4 years old so Toyota said not covered. I barely use the lift gate, only for Costco runs and it's just Hubby and I so maybe 5 times a year. So 20 uses and it broke. Currently getting a quote from a repair shop since Toyota said no. They did state that not only the hinges are breaking but the piece its connected too has bent under the weight of the liftgate. Thanks to those who posted the class action law suit. Also I had the parasitic battery on my car. 3 batteries in 3 years, each service they said no fix. then once my car was over 3 years old, surprise there is a fix but it will cost you $100. I know small change, but still the timing is suspect. I also have the leaky roof racks, thankfully they are doing a recall for that, and they are replacing the entire interior roof lining and racks due to leakage. This has NOT been a good purchase!!
