2022 xle; I have recently had a heavy growl or howl develop that occurs around 1800 rpm under load. Same in all gears. No variation with road speed so I have mentally ruled out drive shaft, wheel bearings etc. Slightly louder depending on throttle pressure. 15,000 Km.

I would go to the dealer since you are under warranty. That "growl or howl" that does not change with road speed could be several things. Alternators can make a whine when they fail. Pilot bearing on back of crankshaft to the transmission main shaft can make a hell of a noise. The rubber center support bearing assembly for the driveshaft can make noise and vibration. Could be a torque converter issue. Could be the rear AWD coupler unit--these can make a growl when bearings fail.

agreed. there are known issues in ICE AWD rav4 where the rear torque bits make excessive noise.
review all the TSB's for your model/year

Thanks for the replies; All good suggestions.
This is a sudden development; There is no noise in neutral at any rpm. I have felt/heard similar with drive shaft issues but they were road speed variable; this is not. I had thoughts about torsional vibration damper springs. Dont know if that is relevant to the rav4. I remember hearing of problems with the two piece flywheels but dont know how these units dampen power pulses. There seems to be a resonance factor since it is only noticeable in a narrow range around 1800 revs. Does get louder with increased throttle but hard to keep it there as it either upshifts or down shifts quickly. I will play with it tomorrow in the manual shift mode so I can keep it in that range. I am 90 miles from the dealer and dont want it to calf on the road.

Will see if I can find anything in the TSB's. Was a fairly competent mechanic years ago but totally out of my depth now. Wrote my trade test in 1967. Dang new fangled gadgetry!:giggle:

I think it may be the AWD Coupler at the end of the driveshaft. That AWD unit bolts onto the front of the differential. You have a '22 XLE so you have the most basic AWD unit that has been used for years on Toyotas and is usually bullet proof. However you have a new car with few miles and the AWD coupler may be defective from the factory. If you don't feel any vibration or thumping (just the noise) I think it would go 90 miles to the dealer. It won't be in AWD though--only 2wd. What does your MID show on the power distribution screen--are the rear wheels getting power?

Unfortunately I think it is normal and a characteristic of 5th gen 2.5L gas engine. This happens more or is more noticeable when the weather is cold. It drove me nuts but I just got used to it. But I don’t have that gas RAV4 anymore. Nothing to worry about in my opinion. If this happens when it is warm then I would be more concerned. If you take it to the dealership they will tell you the same thing. I would not waste my time poking inside the rear differential unless you see leak. When I had my gas model it started around 1600 RPM then the sound Peaked around 1800 RPM the gradually went away above that RPM.

We get down in the 20F range and I do not think my '21 ICE model has ever emitted a "growl or howl."

Mine sounds the same winter or summer.
Is your RAV4 made in USA or Japan or Canada? You are very fortunate. I hated that noise in the winter months. I noticed it more when the temperature went blow 10-15F.

This is a sudden new thing. I drove it out of the showroom Oct 31, 2022 so have been thru a winter with it. I think rear diff problem would change note with road speed; this is at a certain rpm which occurs at different road speeds depending on what gear it is in. This makes me think it has to be in or ahead of the transmission. slightly above or below the 1700 rpm range on the tach is when it occurs.
I would have to go into the paper work, but assume it was Canadian mfg. this has been babied! I doubt if it has ever spun a wheel winter or summer. I thought it might be an issue with them but then it would be better known. Will call the dealer tomorrow and do some detective work. This is the third Toyota I have bought there!

Will let the forum know what I find!
Thanks, all!

It is true. There are some forum members including me who experienced extra noise in 1800÷2000 rpm range, which is more noticeable at cold weather.

At what temperature range does such noise occur?
Lower than -10⁰C if I remember correctly. I didn't experienced that temperature this winter yet. However regardless of temperature there was always extra noise at 1800÷2000 rpm. I think it is kind of resonance. By the way it is become "softer" when I replace gear oil with Red Line 75W85.

Toyota dealer will have a "look" at it if I take it in for a service but other wise it is $150.00 for a minimum shop rate charge unless it is something warranty chargeable. Service writer says that noise is not a familiar complaint. Talking around to other mechanics and my salesman whom I trust, it seems like the really cold temperatures and noise go together.

Isolation rubbers in motor mounts, exhaust hangers body mounts etc. all get stiffer and less effective as they get older and colder.

the day we drove our previous 2019 RAV4 LE AWD from the dealership the temperature was around-5F. I kept asking myself why is there this resonance like sound around 55-60mph. It goes away when you are outside that speed or rpm. Once the weather warmed up, that sound was gone. When the temperature goes below 0F it is not too crazy to hear strange sounds.

Rubber hardening is the answer. Also there is a big rubber center mount surrounding the middle of the drive shaft--if that thing hardens and its bearing freezes that would make a heck of a howl.

I thought I was going crazy cause I have the same growl. Just bought 2024 XLE on New Years Day. Temps were in 40s and 50s, didn’t notice a growl. Temps here in Southern Indiana are now 10F-20F with wind chill at or below zero, and now I’ve had this specific growl at 1800-1900rpm in any gear and at any speed. Only 420mi on my ODO.

I have a 2022 LE and the same exact problem when cold and at 1800 rpm. Did you ever find the problem? Had it to the dealer said it was the front exaust hanger, Then 1 km down the road same problem.
